1.6 Mitsubishi ASX flying into China soon
Published December 6, 2010
The ASX has gotten off to to a good start in the Chinese market, it maybe an imported model and thus subject to rather harsh import taxes but it seems to be doing well against the locally made Nissan Qashqai in which it shares its segment. Currently the ASX is sold in China via the Mitsubishi-Beijing Auto partnership and starts from 180,380rmb for the 2.0L version rising to 239,800rmb for the top of the line AWD model.
A 1.6L version is expected to follow the 2.0L into China which will lower the price considerably and up the fight against the Qashqais 1.6L petrol offering, although there are rumors that Mitsubishi will introduce a 1.8L version with an automatic gearbox where as any 1.6L will be manual only as with the Qashqai model.
Guangzhou Auto recently signed a new joint venture with Mitsubishi that will see them produce passenger cars in China from 2012 onwards, its not entirely clear what the model range will include but it is likely that Mitsubishis light SUV offerings such as the ASX and Outlander will be put into production in China, whilst the Shogun (Pajero) will remain an import and SouEasts JV with Mitsubishi will continue to produce sedans.
