Top 10 Best 2 Door Cars Ever Made (And 5 Worst)

Invest in one of these popular coupe models from the past.

Updated October 22, 2018

If you’re looking at 2 door cars for sale, you want to make sure you spend your money on something worthwhile. Over the years, there have been plenty of duds produced, and you don’t want to end up with one. That’s why we’ve compiled the list of the best 2 door cars ever made.

2 door cars are often referred to as a coupe. Sometimes they are also sports cars, but that’s not always the case. In addition, 2 door cars are also made into convertibles. If you’re wondering if 2 door cars are more expensive to insure, the answer most of the time is yes. That’s because most 2 door cars are considered sports cars so the insurance companies assume they’ll be driven faster. If you’re looking to purchase a used two-door vehicle, you’ll want to take this into consideration. Many people fail to budget for the added insurance cost.

We’ve included some cheap 2 door cars in the list for those on a budget; others are a little more of a luxury. While this list contains our top ten, there were many more that could’ve been included and we tried to highlight a variety of styles.

1. 2015 Aston Martin V12 Vantage

2 door carsThis Aston Martin offers the perfect balance between control and power making it one of the best 2 door cars. In fact, many people hailed it as the best Aston ever built. With its mighty 5.9-liter V12 engine, you would think there wouldn’t be room for anything else under the hood. You’ll know it’s a beast simply by listening to the sexy roar coming from the exhaust.

As far as the ride goes, you can’t get much better than this. This coupe provides superior handling and nimble steering. Inside the cabin is where the magic happens. The trimmed surfaces feature exquisitely stitched leather, while aluminum surrounds the dash, and Kevlar covers the seats. Of course, this beauty isn’t cheap. You aren’t going to find a used one for much under $100,000. Of course, you could downgrade to the V8 instead and save a little money, but you’re going to give up the 563 horsepower for 430 instead.

2. 2000 Audi TT

2000 Audi TT - passenger side viewThe Audi TT debuted at the end of 1998 and there were some significant problems with the original design. After numerous high-speed accidents, Audi worked at improving the handling with their Electronic Stability Program (ESP). They also added Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) plus a rear spoiler and modified suspension system.

What came from all this hard work was amazing. In 2000, it was nominated for the North American Car of the Year Award. If that wasn’t enough, it was in the Car and Driver Ten Best List for 2000 and then again in 2001. The best part about buying this car used is that it’s actually one of the best 2 door cars under $5,000.

3. 2005 Bentley Continental GT

2005 Bentley Continental GT - drivers side front viewThis exclusive and stylish coupe has all the luxury and power you would want without spending a fortune. The interior is constructed from only high-quality materials and features some high-tech gear. This luxury coupe isn’t just one of the best 2 door cars, but it also comes with all-wheel-drive which inspires confidence. With its 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 engine, you can expect 552 horsepower. Even though this is a car from over ten years ago, it still produces more power than most new cars today.

In fact, you can find them for under $40,000, which isn’t too bad. The downside to this car is that the four-passenger seating is questionable. Sure, it’s there in a pinch if you need it, but most adults aren’t going to feel comfortable getting into that back seat. In addition, you won’t find one with a manual transmission, so that’s something you’ll have to give up.

4. 2000 Honda S2000 Roadster

2000 Honda S2000 Roadster - right rear viewThis one-of-a-kind roadster is sleek, modern, and fun-to-drive. That’s why it deserves to be on our list of the best 2 door cars. What’s great about this convertible is that you’ll be able to find them for right around 10k. You can’t fully appreciate how it feels to be behind the wheel of a Honda S2000 Roadster until you get the chance for yourself. It features a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower.

When you combine this power with its active handling, retractable top, and conservative styling, you get a complete package. The S200 will always be an enthusiast favorite and is going to become a classic. That’s why you would want to grab one now if you had the chance.

5. 2012 Lexus LFA

2012 Lexus LFA - right front viewConsidering this is one of the fastest Lexus cars ever created, it will still fetch about half a million dollars on the used market. Considering the MSRP in 2012 was only $375,000, this is becoming quite the collectible and one of the best 2 door cars ever made. The lightweight of this car adds to the acceleration potential of the 4.8-liter V10. It’s created from Toyota’s Formula One racing engine and produces 552 horsepower.

Power isn’t all it has; it’s also hyper-accurate with the steering and supplies razor-sharp agility. Because the engine is front-mounted, but behind the front axle, it also achieves a near-equal weight distribution. The two-seat exotic sports car comes in one trim which included 20-inch alloy wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way heated power seats, Bluetooth, a 12-speaker sound system, and iPod interface. There were also some options available including a rearview camera and special-order color schemes.

The Lexus LFA also featured an exquisite cabin, but it lacked the prestige of other exotics like Ferrari. Most people didn’t expect Lexus to build something so magnificent when it came to sports cars, and we’ll probably never see anything like it again.

Fifty of the LFA models were produced with the Nurburgring package, so it’s unlikely you’ll get your hands on one of those. If you could afford it, you would gain a fixed rear wing, track-ready suspensions, an additional ten horsepower, quicker shifting times, and special wheels.

6. 1997 Porsche 911

1997 Porsche 911 - drivers side viewIf you have over $50,000 to blow, you’ll want to invest in a 1997 Porsche 911. This is one of the most iconic shapes in automotive history and the performance rivals supercars that cost three times as much. This isn’t the car for the faint at heart; driving takes concentration and effort. You need to manipulate the gears and clutch carefully, but in return, you receive an unrivaled experience.

The phenomenal acceleration is just as amazing as the superb handling. The 16-inch tires grab hold of the road and never let go. On top of that, it’s been hailed for its braking system as well. The ride might not always be comfortable in the city, but when you let this beast loose on the highway, you’re in for a treat. Of course, the interior is slightly cramped, but who buys a high-priced sports car to have a roomy cabin? We love it and knew it had to be one of the best 2 door cars.

7. 2003 Porsche Boxster

2003 Porsche Boxster - rear viewIt seemed only fitting that we add another Porsche, but one that doesn’t cost so much money. This option as one of the best 2 door cars under $10,000 fits most anyone’s budget but still allows for plenty of fun on the road. Just like the 911, this Porsche offers some supreme handling and plenty of power. The power top goes down quickly, allowing you to enjoy the warm sunshine faster.

With the mid-engine design, iconic Porsche styling, and exceptional steering, this Boxster receives more credit than it gets. Of course, the interior is slightly cheap which hurt the company a little, but you won’t find such a great vehicle at this price point anymore.

8. 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia

2010 Ferrari 458 Italia - left front viewThere’s almost nothing bad to say about this sports car, which is why it deserves its spot on our best 2 door cars list. It offers unparalleled performance, world-class handling, a brilliant transmission, and finely-crafted cabin. Of course, there was no manual transmission offered with it, but that can easily be overlooked. The mid-engine layout made the handling out of this world, just what you would expect from this Italian automaker.

It also produced one of the best sounds ever heard with its V8 engine. The 4.5-liter engine produces 562 horsepower making it capable of a 0 to 60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds.  It set the benchmark for other exotic sports cars. It does feature a little added weight with the aluminum construction, but it was safer and came with lots of technology.

9. 2005 VW Golf GTI

2005 VW Golf GTI = right side viewThis cute, sporty coupe is a blast to drive and often found for less than $5,000. It came with plenty of standard equipment and the cabin exuded a premium feel. With the ease of its hatchback design, there was plenty of cargo room. In addition, there was an available six-speed manual transmission offered that year.

This option for the best 2 door cars is also low-maintenance, so you won’t be spending a lot of money to keep it running. It might have been offered as a budget-friendly car, but it lasted well beyond what most people assumed it would. This compact car was quite the surprise and continues to live on because of it’s fun style, sporty drive, and reliability.

10. 2006 Bugatti Veyron

2006 Bugatti Veyron - right front viewWe had to end the best 2 door cars list with a bang, so we chose this Bugatti. There’s nothing in the world that prepares you for the acceleration you’ll feel from this supercar. Let’s face it; there are sports cars, then there’s a Bugatti! It features 1000 horsepower and a top speed of 252 mph. No wonder they still sell for more than a million dollars. In fact, you have to be someone like Tom Brady to own a car like this.

The Veyron certainly screams for attention while on the road and no one will miss seeing you behind the wheel. With a quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16 engine, it would be difficult to avoid such a scene. In fact, few cars have made such an impact on the world of automobiles like this one has. It’s ridiculously fast, extremely sexy, and worth the top spot of our best 2 door cars list.

Worst 2 Door Cars Ever Made

If we’re going to discuss the best 2 doors cars ever made, then we have to briefly touch on the worst. We’ve included four vehicles that everyone would agree should have never been produced in the first place.

1. Plymouth Prowler

1999 Plymouth Prowler - right rear viewDuring the mid-1990s, automakers had more tools at their disposal to create new cars with. This allowed them to design unique and interesting concepts. One that should have never made production is the Plymouth Prowler. It was supposed to inspire feelings of the hot rod days, but it was just a disappointment.

While they might have wanted to make a hot rod, they clearly forgot to give it enough power. The 3.5-liter V6 and 250 horsepower was nothing to get excited about. There wasn’t even a manual transmission offered. It also featured a rough ride, lack of utility, and wasn’t comfortable to ride in. In the five years of production, less than 12,000 models were sold. We figure it probably drew more Neon sales than anything from people heading to dealers to see the Prowler.

2. 1992 Subaru SVX

1992 Subaru SVX - Worst 2 Door Cars Ever MadeSubaru built a reputation for themselves for producing dependable, practical cars, but this isn’t anything you would have expected from them. It was designed by an Italian and featured split windows that weren’t easy to use. It also featured a useless four-speed transmission, and cost more than anything else in their lineup at the time.

The 3.3-liter flat-6 engine did perform well and they offered all-wheel drive, so it did have that going for it. But the windows were just a deal-breaker. They were created to decrease the interior turbulence when opened, but they were a total dud. It takes a special person to like a car like this one.

3. Ford Probe

Ford Probe - worst coupeThis coupe was produced in partnership with Mazda and was originally planned to become the fourth generation Mustang in America. As you can imagine, this didn’t go over well with Mustang fans, especially because it featured front-wheel-drive.

On top of the strange shoe-shape, it also had a terrible name and weak V6 engine. Due to poor sales, the bland sports car only made it on the market for eight years.

4. Yugo GV

Yugo GV - worst 2 door car everDoes this really need any explanation? This European import made its way to the United States from 1985 through 1992. The only word that could properly describe it is a brick. Let’s not forget the unsightly carpet that came inside and cheap plastic materials. Suffice to say; you weren’t going anywhere fast in a Yugo as it only came with a 1.1-liter engine and 55 horsepower. The only thing this car is known for is topping out most charts for the worst 2 door car ever.

What are Your Favorite 2 Door Cars?

This list is anything but extensive. We could have gone on for a year telling you about all the great 2 door cars that have been produced over the years. Of course, the selection is also a personal choice; there might be some that thought the Yugo was the best 2 door car ever. Either way, we sure have had an extensive selection of automobiles to choose from in the United States and there’s always something available to suit anyone’s tastes.

With that said, we would love to hear which 2 door cars you like the best.  Is it a supercar, coupe, or convertible? Let us know and maybe we’ll run another list in the future with your answers.
