2012 Los Angeles Auto Show – Fiat 500e Revealed
Updated February 7, 2017
Fiat’s little Italian car has been making great strides here on the west of the Atlantic. With unique styling, excellent fuel economy, and a price that doesn’t hurt too much to mention, Fiat is turning out to be a popular car, not only among the fuel-conscious, but those looking for a little Italian flair. Officially, the 500e will be available in California in 2013.
Fiat already produces vehicles that are capable of more than 30 mpg, with manual transaxle versions expected to hit 40 mpg by next year, versions including the basic 500 two door coupe – can I call it a coupe? – maybe if we add the turbo, the 500c cabriolet, and the sporty Abarth. The latest version of the 500 will be a fully electric vehicle [EV], the Fiat 500e.
We will get a sneak peek of the new compact EV at the 40th Anniversary American Music Awards this Sunday, but won’t get a full revelation until the end of the month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, running November 30 through December 9.
The small form factor of the Fiat 500 series is a perfect basis for electrification. Although Fiat hasn’t given us too much detail on the power-train, we can clearly see more aerodynamic features on the exterior, as well as an EV redesigned dash on the model shots released. It looks like there is a push-button shifter as well.
Although Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne isn’t particularly fond of EV technology, Fiat needs a zero-emissions vehicle in California and a few other states in order to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy [CAFE] standards. It remains to be seen whether or not it will get a wider distribution than California.
