2013 Scion xD
Published July 9, 2012
Yes it’s boring and safe and uneventful and it doesn’t exactly make a big splash on the design front, but the Scion xD is everything it’s supposed to be. Which is a fairly reliable and a surprisingly versatile car.
The impressive DOHC 1.8 liter four cylinder engine manages 128hp and 125lbs of torque. And for this little run about that works just fine. It’s a smooth overall ride even at highway speeds as long as you remind yourself to respect its limitations. There is a choice between a 5 speed manual transmission and a 4 speed automatic. In a perfect world a manual 6 speed transmission would be ideal for this car, but it’s not a perfect world. Don’t be afraid to load the cargo space up and bring along your friends. There’s moderate room in this vehicle for everyone and for hauling your friends junk around on moving day there’s 10.5 cubic feet of cargo space once you fold the 60/40 split rear seats down.
All trim is standard on this vehicle besides the choice between two transmissions. At a somewhat reasonable starting price of $16,670 the Scion xD comes equipped standard with air conditioning, power windows, power locks and remote keyless entry. Also cruise control, a tilt steering wheel equipped with audio controls and a multi-information display make it feel like you’re actually getting a decent dollar value from the Scion xD. Especially when you consider the standard Pioneer audio system with Bluetooth and HD radio. With the youthful market in mind you’re also provided with an auxiliary audio jack and a USB port with iPhone connectivity. In other words there will be no shortage of entertainment while driving the Scion xD.
For the safety conscious there are a variety of standard features. Including but not limited to Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control. Also, you want bags in your face? The Scion xD has them everywhere. There are driver and front passenger airbags, driver and front passenger seat mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags. And should you have to there are lower anchors and tethers for children or a car seat.
There are a few wheel options for this bad boy. If you really want to pimp your ride you can ditch the standard 15inch wheels for some 16inch aluminum alloy five spoke rims. Or you can get totally crazy with it and splurge for the 18inch aluminum alloy rims that come in silver or black five spoke and a third option of black nine spoke. But for the two grand large you’ll be paying for those kicks you might as well just start looking at a completely different car.
It’s hard to write anything to critical about little cars like the 2013 Scion xD. For some reason it feels a bit like bullying the little underdeveloped ugly kid on the playground. Some compact cars are definitely more adorable than the xD but in the end its all about economics and this car is most certainly economical. The base price may seem a little steep considering its competition like the Nissan Versa, but under closer inspection you realize that Scion has used a no-nonsense approach by offering all the same standard features and options under one trim package.
