2014 Mazda 6 – Bold Reinventions
Updated July 6, 2012
The freshly re-imagined Mazda 6 for 2014 is on its way and it’s creating a pretty big ripple in the gossip pool. Mazda has pulled all the stops. Quite simply, it’s a beautiful car. The brand new sleek body design is bold and commanding and certainly arrests your attention. However it leans more on the side of timeless athletic elegance rather than audacious and trendy. The gaping grill and wide narrow headlights make for an expression of determined concentration. The interior of the 2014 Mazda 6 is also streamlined with a very sophisticated organic appearance to the dash and cockpit. The white body molded seats counterbalance the predominantly black interior creating an interesting and customized atmosphere. This new approach all stems from the Mazda’s KODO – Soul of Motion design theme initially introduced in 2010.
Mazda is introducing its SKYACTIV Technology, which is essentially a branding term referring to Mazda’s new approach to providing an affordable and fuel efficient vehicle without compromising performance and the driving experience. It is Mazda’s reinvention of their brand. It is their fresh and imaginative approach to the entire car, encompassing everything from the engine and transmission to the chassis and body design. The SKYACTIV-D technology for the 2014 Mazda 6 is a 173hp 2.2 liter diesel engine that Mazda proudly boasts having the lowest compression ratio (14.0:1) of any diesel engine in the world. Its two-stage turbo charger generates smooth response across all levels of engine speed. The ultra low compression ratio has the added benefit of eliminating the need for expensive exhaust after-treatments as the low compression vastly reduces the buildup of nitrogen oxides and soot. In addition, according to Mazda, this new diesel technology increases fuel efficiency by 20%. Complimenting these attractive features is what Mazda has called the i-ELOOP (Intelligent Energy Loop) regenerative breaking system, which is very conveniently and resourcefully capacitor operated and bolsters fuel economy by another 10%. And sweetening the pot further is the i-STOP system which Mazda claims is the quickest diesel engine restart at under 0.4 seconds. There has been no promise that the diesel engine will be available to the North American market. More likely will be the option of the SKYACTIV-G, the gasoline version of the engine that achieves the same 14.0:1 compression ratio. Mazda claims this engine performance results in a 15% increase in both fuel efficiency and torque. There will be no V6 option as there was in the past. Mazda’s new focus is their SKYACTIV Technology of small yet highly efficient and optimized performance engines.
The 2014 Mazda 6 will be entering the highly competitive ring of performance family sedans swinging hard. This car will predictably have considerable impact on that market as Mazda has focused on its target demographic of young families and has certainly done their homework on what it is that demographic both require and demand of a vehicle. Mazda understands that the family sedan market now consists largely of uncompromising and trend setting individuals who want a vehicle that is not only stylish and performance oriented but also fuel efficient and economically viable. This is no small niche market. This is every young family you can imagine that no longer appeals to the idea of driving a minivan or SUV. This car will make other soccer moms jealous. It will not stand for being a second vehicle. One look at the 2014 Mazda 6 will tell you this is definitely not your father’s sedan.
