2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG, the Epitaph of Power and Class
Published March 4, 2015
AMG (Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach) have been tinkering and fine tuning sports cars for the German car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz, for over 45 years. With 2015, AMG is back with another CLA, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG. The CLA came into production in 2013 as basically a scaled down version of the CLS and modelled with the interior of the SLK in mind.
Aesthetically speaking the exterior looks uncannily like the CLS with only a few differences here and there, but that being said the CLA 45 still has that iconic Mercedes-Benz look and feel that fans have come to love. It is just a shame Mercedes-Benz and AMG didn’t get more creative with the design of the 2015 model, instead of merely copying the body of the CLS and Interior of the SLK for the most part. One irritating addition to the CLA 45’s interior is the infotainment screen which is on top of the dashboard and not integrated into the centre console; it doesn’t even face the driver. The interior is also riddled with cheap plastic parts for days. In a car that will cost you $48,500 before you have even had a chance to look at all the optional extras, it just begs the question, why? The fully adjustable racing seats, however are extremely comfortable and will keep you in the zone on the track and comfy for those long Sunday drives.
Being one of the smallest models Mercedes-Benz and AMG produce, and despite being a two door coupe, the back seats are very small and taller people will most definitely have issues fitting into this car. But in light of this the light weight of the 2015 CLA 45 only means better performance right.
It shares basically the same engine as the CLA 250 but with a significant boost in power. The CLA 45’s AMG 2.0L turbo inline-4 engine will generate 355 HP with a top speed 155 Mph, and it will go from 0-60 in a very respectable 4.4 seconds. So there is no doubt that the CLA has the power to uphold its AMG name. The turbo only kicks in at the higher rev range, so driving around in traffic or the suburbs, it won’t feel like you’re driving a sports car, that is until the traffic clears and you can really put your foot down on the autobahn. Going fast is where this car shines brightest and that is what AMG have designed the CLA 45 to do
But how does she handle? Perhaps the CLA 45’s biggest down fall, its flappy paddle dual clutch 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT® DCT automatic transmission, which is a tad unresponsive and lacking in speedier gear changes, is quite disappointing as specially from a dual clutch system. It means that when gearing down coming up to a corner you lose valuable speed trying to get into second or you can try to keep the speed through the corner, but then find yourself in third gear and thus the wrong power band when trying to accelerate out of the turn. Why not offer a manual transmission for people who know how to actually drive? So basically you cannot take full advantage of the incredible chassis and engine because the transmission lets you down. It will take many hours of practice and to understand the way this car handles and drives. So it is not to say that she cannot be driven to her limits, AMG have just made it really difficult to get the most out of her.
Besides the lacklustre transmission, the 2015 CLA 45 AMG is a powerful yet elegant machine that I’m sure will do well on the market.
