Finally: The 2017 Honda CBR1000RR (Apparently)

Could This Be A Sneak Peek At The 2017 CBR1000RR?

Updated August 13, 2018

According to British magazine MCN, this is the first real sneak peek that we’re going to get of the up and coming 2017 CBR1000RR. And if we’re going to believe them and their sources (and why shouldn’t we? They’re pretty accurate most of the time) it seems like the 2017 CBR1000RR is going to have a few unexpected but impressive changes. We’re talking about significant improvements – and Honda fans will be pleased with what’s coming their way. In short: Honda are opting for a small power boost, combined with a significant weight reduction.

Fresh Details Emerge For The 2017 CBR1000RR

It’s fair to say that Honda are more than a step behind their industry competitors in the liter class sportsbike category. The CBR in its current form is nothing compared to the Kawasaki ZX-10R or the BMW S1000RR, but hopefully this new breed of CBR will restore some balance to the force. According to MCN, and their unnamed source at Honda, the new CBR will come equipped with more power, brand new riding aids, electronic semi active suspension from Ohlins, and a significant weight reduction. The source has been quoted as saying: “The changes to the new bike are very significant and there has been a lot of work done to make the bike more competitive with rivals. The weight loss over the current bike will help the bike to turn much more easily and those who have tested it have said it makes for a much sharper bike.”

Still, we don’t expect the new Honda to break any records for power, but we’re hoping for at least 180 hp at the back wheel. It’s not going to be up there with the ZX-10R or S1000RR, but the source has mentioned that the CBR will be shedding up to 8 kilos in weight, which should give it a bit more much needed “oompf.”

Nothing’s confirmed, but we’ll do a quick rundown of what the new CBR1000RR is claimed to be packing. First up, a new ram-air system with a headstock intake, a revised air box and a new fuel injection system are on the cards, as well as an all new, advanced Bosch electronics package. The new system is much, much lighter than the existing Honda C-ABS system, weighing only 3.5 kg, compared with Honda’s current 10 kg unit. The new Bosch 9.1 MP ABS electronics control system comes with a smart Inertial Measurement Unit, superior ABS, traction control, anti-wheelie control and cornering ABS to boot. The new electronics will work in partnership with the all new Ohlins semi-active system which will feature on the new CBR1000RR. According to MCN’s source, they’re an improvement on the already existing units that feature on the current Ducati 1299 Panigale S.

Naturally the exhaust will be overhauled to meet the new Euro4 regulations, probably adding a bit more weight than the older version, but thanks to the lightweight nature of the rest of the CBR, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Aesthetically, the CBR has been updated to look a little more modern. From these pictures, we like what we see. Since we’ve already seen a few sneak peeks of the Honda CBR250RR concept, we can expect the same design language. No doubt it will also include the LED clusters on the sides and in the fairings, as well as the narrow headlight arrangement that Honda have already patented. Overall, it looks a lot like the 2014 Honda CBR1000RR SP…

We’ll have to wait until November’s EICMA showcase to see if any of this comes to fruition – but we’ve got our fingers crossed.
