2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Pushes 640 HP
The 2017 Camaro ZL1 Horsepower Figure Is Seriously Impressive
Updated October 3, 2018
General Motors released information about the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and it really is something else. Named after the legendary 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, of which there were 69 produced, it is one of the rarest and most sought after cars from the Muscle car era.
Supercharged Engine and a new 10-speed automatic transmission
Whereas the 1969 ZL1 had a 427 aluminum big block engine, performance-wise, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 engine follows in its predecessor’s footsteps with a small block LT4 supercharged 6.2 liter V8 engine. Intake and exhaust systems are specifically tailored to the road and track needs of the Chevy Camaro. The 2017 ZL1 is rated at an amazing estimated 640 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque.
Converting the power produced by the 6.2 liter LT4 supercharged V8 engine to forward motion, is either a six-speed manual transmission or 10-speed automatic transmission. The paddle shift 10-speed transmission has 7.39 overall ratios for smaller steps between gears, enabling the LT4 engine to remain at optimal rpm levels during acceleration, particularly when exiting corners.
According to Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product development, “The Camaro ZL1 is designed to excel at everything. It’s a 2+2 coupe offering incredible performance – acceleration, handling, and braking – with the highest level of technology and perfect chassis damping, making it suitable for everyday driving. It will compare well to any sport couple, at any price in any setting.”
Performance Oriented Design
Unlike its competitors, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 does not need a separate options package to be track ready. Track capability is standard with features including the use of 11 additional heat exchangers for optimal powertrain cooling.
Functionality defines form as exterior elements play a part in managing airflow over, under and through the ZL1. For example, a lower grille opening offers greater airflow, and the upper grille incorporates a new version of the ‘flow-tie’ open bow-tie insignia, which differs from the Camaro SS. A new hood with carbon fiber inserts and heat extractor pulls hot air from the engine compartment. Additional enhancements include a larger front splitter, a wing-style rear wing, unique rockers, and wider front fenders. Everything pertaining to the exterior of the ZL1 is tuned to improve aerodynamics for greater high-speed stability.
Performance enhancements extend to the interior of the 2017 Camaro ZL1 with standard Recaro front seats, along with a flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob. A performance Data Recorder is also available.
Fast by Design
The 2017 Camaro ZL1 is designed for track-use as it is designed for road-use. Handling features include a Magnetic Ride Suspension, Performance Traction Management, an electronic limited slip differential, Driver Mode and Custom Launch Control. It also has a stronger power-to-weight ratio than its predecessor, offering 60 additional horsepower and 80 more pound-feet of torque in a package that weighs approximately 200 pounds less.
Additional chassis features include:
- Brembo brakes with six-piston monobloc front calipers – featuring the ZL1 logo – and massive 15.35 inch (390 mm) two-piece front rotors.
- Unique 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with 285/30Z R20 front and 305/30Z R20 rear tires.
- Dual-use road and track special compound and construction Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires, developed specifically for the 2017 Camaro ZL1.
The result is a very unique and fast driving experience.
“Driving the Camaro ZL1 is best described as ‘fast and finesse’,” said executive vice President of Global Product Development Mark Reuss. “It is beautifully balanced, with perfect damping and isolation for optimal performance and driver confidence in virtually any situation – from the Pacific Coast Highway to Willow Springs to Pomona.”
The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 goes on sale late this year.
