2017 Subaru XV Hybrid tS by STI Could Be The Best XV Hybrid Ever
Will the Crosstrek XV STI finally fix the car’s anemic power problems?
Updated October 11, 2018
2017 Subaru XV Crosstrek may not be the most powerful or the fastest thing out there, but it surely is appealing in a strange kind of a way. It is a compact crossover which looks nice and which comes from a company that is hot right about now. However, it seems that the cars Subaru sell in Japan are far more lively and happy compared to this what we get here. Just take a look at the newest Subaru XV Hybrid tS nicely touched up by the STI.
The changes aren’t radical, but they accentuate the friendly character of the car by adding STI style body kit, nice, bold and lively orange bits and cool new wheels. It all works quite awesome with a white exterior finish, making it what could very well be the coolest Subaru hybrid 2017 is bringing our way.
The interior was also visited. STI bits garnish it with side sill plates, sporty seats, and orange details. Sure it is different than before and better too. The XV STI, of course, did not finish it off with cosmetic changes. Much more has been made in terms of tech upgrades. STI tuned the front suspension for better steering feel. It handles sharper with upgraded coil springs. The rear suspension was also touched up with all new damper setting and new coils. We are quite sure, the XV is a bit hard on the bumps now, but the STI badge and add-ons are definitely worth it. What is more, a special edition is available and comes with a flexible tower bar and a flexible draw stiffener.
What was a bit disappointing is the fact that the engine remained the same. Two-liter engine develops 148 hp and 145lb-ft of torque. True, it is aided by an electric motor, but the fact is that with 13 hp and 48 lb-ft of torque, this small engine cannot exactly do much. Nevertheless, it is not all good news about the STI tuned XV Hybrid. This one is available only in Japan and that for a price of $31,750.
The thing that would steer most people away from this vehicle is its apparent disregard for its own off-road-ready heritage. True, the XV STI is very cool, and it’s probably the coolest Subaru hybrid 2017 is going to bring, but we can’t help but notice that most, if not all of the upgrades cater to city driving. Especially the hybrid powertrain.
This is a car that performs surprisingly well on trails, in rain or puddles, and in mud, but this STI Ts trim seems like it’s more interested in making the car a better city driver. While that’s all well and good, and should please the vast majority of XV owners, there are a few of us nuts out there that much prefer the unpaved ways and value our Crosstrek’s ability to hang in the wilderness.
Perhaps what it ultimately comes down to is our insane jealousy that Japan gets all the cool models and we don’t. I don’t doubt that the XV STI Crosstrek would be a hit stateside, even with a hybrid powertrain. Anything with an STI badge is basically worth its weight in gold these days and the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid 2017 is begging to deliver us is unfortunately never going to drive on American roads.
