The 2018 BMW i3S is the i3 We’ve All Been Waiting For
i3 Hit the Gym Since Debut; Redesigned with Style in Mind
Published September 13, 2017
When BMW released the i3 back in 2015, we can’t say we were terribly impressed. It was a sad, sulky-looking car that impressed exactly zero people it drove by and honestly, kind of ruined my day whenever I saw one. Luckily, BMW has decided to do something about these discrepancies. Introducing the 2018 BMW i3S.
The new one is more like Tomorrow Never Dies Pierce Brosnan, while the old one was more like Mamma Mia Pierce Brosnan. We still kind of liked it, but we much prefer another version…perhaps a younger, more fit, more handsome version.
While this new i3S is certainly more fit and trim, BMW decided to stick to the same general idea. With a new two-tone paint job and massive front black surfaces which can trick you from afar into thinking that they are air intakes, the i3S seems much bolder.
The 2018 BMW i3S is Slightly More Refined
It did hit the gym. BMW introduced us to a new 2018 BMW i3S with wider wheels, more exterior glitz, sharpened suspension, flared wheel arches, and more aggressive air intakes. This certainly gave it a bit of a rebel appearance, additionally emphasized with a buff up in the engine compartment. The i3S is only slightly more powerful than its base model counterpart; it received 184 hp compared to the stock’s 170 and 199 lb-ft of torque compared to the stock’s 184. It is not a massive improvement, but with all the other drivetrain tweaks, BMW is hoping to ensnare a few extra customers with the new model’s better handling and improved responsiveness.
Not that it matters but the i3S also has a 0-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds and is electronically limited to 100 mph. To be frank, I’ve driven about that fast in a car about that size with pretty similar specs, and all I’ve got to say is that 100 mph is plenty fast for a car like that.
Given the improvements, it’s safe to say that the 2018 BMW i3S is more Bimmer than ever. Some might even see the new facade and change their perception based solely on that; personally, we’re quite fond of the facelift. BMW may be seeing a line of customers wrapped around the building ready to buy this newest grocery getter…
…At least until they find out about the price.
The 2017 BMW i3 has been selling for $45,445 and for $49,295 with the extended range. Now, the BMW i3S with its fine novelties, more power but same, middle-of-the-road range of 118 miles (for the version with 94-amp battery) will be even more expensive.
Before, this car might’ve had an argument. The Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt are really the next closest competitors as far as options and size go, and while the Bimmer is more expensive than both by about $12,000, you could definitely still justify an i3 purchase. The jig is up now, though, because the Tesla Model 3 just came out with an MSRP of $35,000.
More or less, people didn’t buy the i3 due to its insane price. Yes, it is a carbon fiber technological masterpiece, but c’mon, that’s so much money for something Fiesta-sized. Thanks, but no thanks.
It may be the same story with the new one despite it getting a nice makeover. The Model 3 has twice the range, twice the space and is probably just as nice inside for at least $10k less. I’d say that it doesn’t really matter how good the i3S looks or drives, the Model 3 is going to eat it for lunch.
Standard 2018 BMW i3 Available as Well
Apart from the 2018 BMW i3S, the company released a standard 2018 i3 as well. This one now makes do with standard LED lights and two new finish options – Melbourne Red Metallic and Imperial Blue Metallic.
Updated models also receive the upgraded BMW iDrive 6 interface and ConnectedDrive, while buyers can also opt for the new $500, 20-foot TurboCord, which enables owners to connect to a 120- or 240-volt outlet to charge the i3 at up to 3.6 kW.
