2018 BMW S1000RR Spy Shot! Big Updates For Next Year!

Spy shots from Germany gives us clues about the 2018 BMW S1000RR!

Updated August 23, 2018

Thanks to a great spy shot from Motorrad Magazine, it seems like the venerable BMW S1000RR will be receiving big updates for 2018. As far as sportsbikes go, the BMW S1000RR is one of the best – but it might surprise you to learn that it’s already eight years old, and from the day it first rolled into production it has only had one significant update…and that was back in 2015. It seems like BMW Motorrad have also realized that the S1000RR is in need of a serious update, because as great as the bike is, it is a little dates when compared to its segment rivals. In terms of on-board technology, the S1000RR isn’t nearly as sophisticated as the current CBR1000RR, ZX-10R, R1, or GSX-R1000… But next year will see that problem remedied.

The 2018 BMW S1000RR Upgrades!

Well, in truth, it’s a bit silly calling it an upgrade – it’s more like a whole new motorcycle. The chassis has been updated, and if Motorrad Magazine are to be believed, the engine has undergone some significant changes too. As you can see by taking a closer look at the image, the 2018 BMW S1000RR will come with a redesigned swing arm, a relatively new chassis shape, completely revised bodywork and new design features – the exhaust and headlights are probably the most obvious examples of the latter. The engine casing is probably the most interesting thing spied though, because the casing has been changed slightly would lead us to believe that the inline-four engine has had some work done to it for the 2018 edition.

Given the timing of the spy shot, we’d safely assume that this so-called 2018 BMW S1000RR will be unveiled a little later on this year at one of the major European tradeshows: either Cologne’s INTERMOT, or Milan’s EICMA.

And while we’re on the subject of assumptions, we’ll also make some guesses as to what else we should expect from the new model. A new IMU system would bring the 2018 S1000RR up to date and in line with the rest of its competitors, perhaps with a more sophisticated electronics package to really tie everything together too. On top of that, a new display interface is probably on the cards, as well as the all-important power gains from the engine. Again, all of this last paragraph is nothing more than speculation. But knowing BMW, the all new S1000RR is probably going to have a few more tricks up its sleeve than anyone could possible predict.

We’re going to have to wait until one of these big trade shows to find out the full details but as soon as we learn more, or get treated to a few more spy shots, we’ll let you know. Until then, be happy in the knowledge that a 2018 S1000RR is probably coming.
