Leaked Pictures Reveal An Overhauled Honda Gold Wing 2018 Model
The Honda Gold Wing 2018 model has been in need of a proper update for a while now
Updated August 23, 2018
We’ve been waiting for a significant update for the Honda Gold Wing for quite some time now, but it looks like Honda will finally give us what we want for 2018. It’s not exactly been a secret that an updated Gold Wing was coming, it’s one of Honda’s flagship motorcycles and it’s a popular touring machine all over the world – some might even argue that it’s the very best touring machine of them all – so we knew that Honda was going to get around to giving it a significant update and an overhaul eventually. What we didn’t expect, however, was just how far Honda were going to with the updates. From what we can see here, it’s almost like Honda has built us a whole new bike!
The 2018 Honda Gold Wing: New Front End Options?
Now that we’ve been treated with some leaked images, we can really see what the 2018 Honda Gold Wing is going to look like. The most alarming change is the addition of a new kind of BMW Duolever style front suspension system. In previously “leaked” images, we’d seen that Honda was toying with a new kind of suspension for the front, but now we can see that they actually settled on the Hossack-style version. As you can see, the new Honda Gold Wing is equipped with an unorthodox system that’s reminsicent of a BMW Duolever front end setup, with two wishbones mounted to a girder with bearings that handle the steering. The actual suspension is handled by a hidden shock absorber under the handlebars. No doubt it would be a semi-active unit that adjusts itself to suit the road conditions.
As expected, the 2018 Honda Gold Wing will come powered by the usual flat-six engine but thanks to new emissions laws we imagine that it’s going to have some changes and hopefully a power boost.
We do know that Honda will be giving the new Gold Wing almost every single bit of motorcycling gadgetry under the sun though. Last year, the Gold Wing’s project leader Junichi Sakamoto was quoted saying: “If we were to come out with a new Gold Wing, we would like to surprise people with the amount of new technology,” which says to me: it’s got everything.
Thanks to the new pictures, we can see that there has been a fairly hefty update to the Gold Wing’s infotainment system, bringing it nice and up to date, and in line with the rest of the big tourer competition.
Expect sophisticated traction control, ABS, multiple engine modes, the most advanced infotainment system in the industry, reverse assist, an extra cruiser-friendly extra gear, semi-active suspension, parking assistance, and possibly even DCT. DCT (or Dual Clutch Transmission, to its friends) may very well be coming to Honda’s hulking behemoth…but we can’t guess that from a few leaked images, so we’ll leave the speculation there. And the 2018 Honda Gold Wing release date? No idea at the moment!
