2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5: A Sharp New EV Contender

Much of The Promised Electric Vehicle Future is Arriving in The 2022 Ioniq 5

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

This is not the same Ioniq Electric that we recently got an insane lease deal on or the Ioniq PHEV that we recently tested, but instead the first in a line of dedicated EVs from Hyundai. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a sharp-looking feature-rich EV that is likely to give some real competition to established competitors in the space, like the Tesla Model Y, VW ID 4, and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

New Hyundai EV Platform

Inoiq 5 is the first vehicle to debut on Hyundai’s new E-GMP platform, which is a specifically developed EV chassis. This same platform will be used to fill out the Ioinq all-electric brand of vehicles with a sedan (Ioniq 6) and large SUV (Ioniq 7) soon.

A signature of this new BEV platform is a super long wheelbase and a flat interior floor, which combine to offer up massive interior space. In the 2022 Ioniq 5 that means a 182.4-inch wheelbase, which is longer than the 3-row Hyundai Palisade SUV. The overall vehicle size of the Ioniq 5 isn’t huge though, as it’s about 14-inches shorter, 3-inches narrower, and 5-inches shorter than the big Palisade.

What The Hyundai Ioniq 5?

As with so many vehicles these days, the Ioniq 5 has a personality disorder. At first glance, it looks like a fun small hatchback. Then you look again and it’s for sure a crossover (CUV). Upon third glance and knowing the size it could be a mid-sized SUV. Officially Hyundai calls the 2022 Ioniq 5 a “midsize CUV.”

In the end, does it matter what category it fits in? All we know is that it has the tech and specs to back up its impressively good looks. The Ioniq 5’s good looks come directly from a long lineage of truly gorgeous Hyundai concept cars worth looking back at- HERE.

More Power, More Range

Two battery sizes and two motor configurations are on offer with the 2022 Ioniq 5. You can choose either a 58 kWh or 72.6 kW battery pack. You can also choose between a single rear-mounted motor or a front and rear dual-motor configuration, which gives you a RWD or AWD option. No matter how you configure the car you’ll get an electronically limited top-speed of 115 mph.

The fastest configuration is the dual-motor AWD with big battery. This set up can sprint to 62 mph in 5.2-seconds. It makes that happen by laying down about 300 hp and 446 lb.-ft. of torque. In order to achieve the best range, you’ll want a RWD single motor with big battery configuration. This should get you about 290 miles of range. None of these numbers are class-leading but are impressive usable performance and leaps and bounds above the current Hyundai EV lineup.

Let Your EV Charge Your Life

If you find yourself with extra electrons to burn, that aren’t needed for range, then the Ioniq 5 is ready to charge your life. This Hyundai has vehicle-to-load (V2L) features that allow you to charge electric devices, even larger ones like e-Bikes, fridges, heaters, etc… This will be great for relatively local car-camping adventures.

The V2L system is a 3.6 kW power supplier, or basically a mobile charger. There are power ports under the second row of seats for when the vehicle is on, and another in the charging port on the exterior for when the vehicle is off and stationary.

Eco-Friendly Living Space Interior

Inside the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 you’ll find a mix of tech, comfort and eco-friendly materials.

Up front you get a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and a customizable 12-inch digital gauge cluster. You also get Hyundai’s first go at an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD), which essentially turns the windshield into a display screen.

The interior of the Ioniq 5 has a ‘Living Space’ theme. It features impressive reclining seats, which are 30% thinner to optimize second-row legroom. It also features a “Universal Island,” which is a moveable center console that slides back for second-row passengers to access.

The touchpoints in the interior, like the seats, headliner, door trim, floor, and armrests, all use “eco-friendly, sustainably sourced materials.” This includes things like recycled plastic bottles, plant-based and wool yarns, and plant-based paints.

Get Ioniq

While we don’t know exact availability or pricing yet, we expect late 2021 availability in the U.S., with pricing expected between $30,000 and $45,000 depending on configuration and options. Also, unlike many of the competitors, the Ioniq is still eligible for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, which helps on the value front considerably.

Really unique and impressive wheels, that carry on the “Parametric Pixel design theme,” and sharp aggressive and motion invoking lines of the rest of the Inoiq 5 are sure to impress more than just me. This is one new EV that I’m very excited to see and experience in person.
