While nearly every automaker moves as quickly as possible to put the smallest engines they can into their performance cars in the name of fuel economy, Jaguar is doing something different for 2022. For the new model year, the Jaguar F-Type is saying farewell to its turbocharged 4-cylinder option and cheerio to the 3.0L turbo V6. Instead, the F-Type is adding displacement and will be offered in the U.S. exclusively with supercharged 5.0L V8s. That means the existing F-Type R, along with the new model, dubbed the 2022 Jaguar F-Type P450.
Even better, the new Jagur F-Type V8 will start ($69,900) for more than $10,000 less than the current V6 P380 AWD.
All V8, No Waiting
The new engine will offer 444 hp along with 428 lb.-ft. of torque, a significant leap in power over the 380 hp offered by the P380’s V6. It still leaves a buffer between it and the 575 hp of the R model, helping that cat justify its higher price.
Jaguar doesn’t mention the displacement (of either V8), but based on the power figure we’ll assume it’s the same as the P450 already offered in other markets. That means that just like the R, it is a 5.0L V8 wearing a supercharger, with the engine re-tuned for this application.
More Cylinders, More Value?
Like the R, Jaguar will offer the P450 with Quiet Start. That’s the automaker’s digital option to remove the roar of the Jaguar V8 at start-up, making sure that you’re not waking your kids or the neighbors every morning when you leave. It holds closed the bypass valves in the exhaust to do it, but you can override Quiet Start by picking dynamic mode or pressing the exhaust mode button before you start the car.
RWD and AWD Equally Quick
The 2022 Jaguar F-Type P450 will come with a standard electronic active rear differential to improve grip at the back wheels. It can hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds from a stop, with the rear-drive and all-wheel-drive models posting identical times. The time is also half a second quicker than the old P380 AWD model.
Configurable Dynamics, Jag’s name for configurable drive modes, is standard. The P450 will also offer 20-inch wheels wrapped around 380 mm front/376 mm rear brake discs. That’s slightly larger than the brakes of the outgoing cars. No transmission was specified, but with all other F-Type models coming with an 8-speed auto, it’s likely to get that one too. Sadly we’re still unlikely to see a manual option.
Elegant Interior Fittings
Inside, Jaguar F-Type P450 will have Windsor Leather and satin-finish chrome available. It will have Jaguar Leaper logo embroidery in the headrests and monogram stitching for the seats and the door trims. The center console, glovebox release, and seatbelt guides all will wear “Jaguar Est. 1935” markings to show off the brand’s heritage. P450 gets 6-way power-adjust seats while R-Dynamic trim gets 12-way seats with memory. The R-Dynamic model also has a Delta aluminum console, power-adjust steering column, and R-Dynamic logo door sill plates.
Setting the R-Dynamic trim apart from the base P450 on the outside are R-Dynamic badges, gloss black front splitter, side sills, and rear venturi. It has its own 20-inch split-spoke wheels and will be offered only with all-wheel drive.
