Published May 5, 2015

Stunts are great, but they’re planned and practiced and can always be edited. Check out these short videos of some unusual masters of driving doin’ it right

Most Dominating Performance in a Formula 1 race

Ayrton Senna, the finest driver ever to race an F1 car, moves from fifth to first in his underpowered McLaren on the opening lap of the 1993 European Grand Prix. In doing so he overtook three drivers who would account for 12 World Drivers Championships. By the end, Senna had lapped the entire field except for one car and finished over a minute ahead of second place Damon Hill.

Longest Surviving Driver on the Bolivian Highway of Death

The subject of a documentary a few years back, the driver identified simply as Rita, takes the film crew on a harrowing drive across the infamous El Camino de la Muerte. She’s driven the 38 mile route for 22 years and the fact that she’s alive is testament to her skills. On average someone dies on the highway everyday (though not usually one at a time, more like a bus a week).

Most Precise Bus Driving Through a Rock Formation

Needle’s Eye is a two mile long tunnel blasted through sheer granite walls traversed by South Dakota Highway 87 (which is also known as Needles Highway). Many tourists, uncomfortable with driving their own cars, trucks, and especially motor homes, make the trip on tour buses piloted by extremely skilled and experienced drivers.

Top Performance by a Tank Crew in a Reality TV Show

I don’t really understand it either, but it has a couple of things going for it. One, they shoot the cannon, two they cross deep water, three, the tank slalom is pretty cool, and three, I don’t think there was a single Kardashian involved.

Longest Air Time in an Actual WRC Event

When a WRC Hyundai hits an actual crest in the middle of an actual rally, with no do-overs, and manages to travel the length of three city buses in the air, it definitely deserves the award named for the late Colin McRae.
