5 Unlikely But Potentially Awesome Top Gear Guests
Updated December 28, 2016
Top Gear has had some pretty spectacular guests on the track over the years, from Hollywood legends, sporting heroes, TV stars and top models. They’ve managed to spring a few surprises too, most notably when model Jodie Kidd tore her way around the track and to the top of the leader board.
Not many people could have foreseen her rip-roaring challenge of the top boys, or Steve Coogan’s awesome lap, which included an amazing impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the interview afterwards. But that’s the beauty of the ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’ section. You just don’t know what you’re going to get. Here are five guests that we would love to see take on the track in the next series, but are pretty unlikely!
It might come as a shock to some people, but third in line to the throne Harry was rumoured to be a guest on the show in 2011. No idea as to why he bailed, out maybe it was just a rumour, but how cool would that have been? When he’s not too busy flying helicopters, maybe he’d like to drive the reasonably priced car in 2013 or beyond? Surely fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan is a doddle compared to taking on The Stig in a banged out Ford Escort?
She’s a style icon, the wife of Prince William (and soon to be the mother of his child) and one of the most famous and most loved public figures on the planet. But wouldn’t it be great to see the Duchess of Cornwall wearing a crash helmet and screaming “YEE-HAA!” as she sped around the corners of the rain-drenched Top Gear track. We know that Kate Middleton is a good time girl at heart with that mischievous smile of hers. The BBC need to approach the Royal Family and bring her back to her roots. The public demands Royal wheel spins!
The former Smiths lead singer and one of the world’s most famous vegetarians, Morrissey is a much loved national treasure, and one of the last great eccentric rock stars that the UK has left. Terrifyingly intelligent, intense, moody, hilarious and unpredictable, Morrissey would be an absolute catch for the show. It would be worth seeing just to see the interview between Morrissey and Clarkson, who could either hit it off or hit each other. Either would be great TV. However, it seems very unlikely that this will ever materialise, and the closest we’ve got to seeing it happen is having Neil Morrissey as a guest. Heaven knows we’re miserable now. No offence, Neil.
Ricky Gervais’ best friend and sparring partner Karl Pilkington has become a worldwide phenomenon, with his simple-yet-hilarious worldview, opinions and can’t do attitude. Gervais refers to Karl as the “ultimate little Englander”, but he’s much more than that. He’s a reluctant comic genius with a head like an orange, and he would make the perfect guest for Top Gear. After wimping out on the Bungee Jump in An Idiot Abroad but redeeming himself by allowing himself to be strapped to the top of a plane, speeding around the Top Gear track would be no problem for Karl!
We’ve seen Arnie in car chases, blowing up cars and driving them on two wheels around a car park (see Twins), but we’ve never seen the Austrian Oak drive merrily around a track in a reasonably priced car, and why should we all be deprived of that pleasure? Just pray that he doesn’t sing ‘Yakey Yak’ like he does in Twins. We want pleasant viewing, not unpleasant listening.
Arnie’s recently made his movie comeback after years in Californian politics, so he should be more than prepared for those fast bends. Arnie could well be a contender for the top of the leader board, depending on whether or not he’s getting too old for action scenes.
Daley is a huge Top Gear fan, and would one day like to be a Star in a Reasonably Priced Car. He works with www.insulatedgaragedoors.co.uk to give car owners great protection.
