Motorcycle Phone Mount: Buying Guide & FAQ

Motorcycle Phone Holder

Buying a new phone mount for your bike isn’t as straightforward as you’d probably think it should be. There are different clamp types, different mount types, a wide range of materials being used, and prices that range from the dangerously cheap to the unnecessarily expensive. So which one should you choose? We’ve put together a little buying guide that covers all of the things you need to consider before buying a new phone mount.

Why You Need A Motorcycle Phone Mount

There are many benefits of using a motorcycle phone mount. Using a smartphone to help with everyday tasks has become commonplace, to the point where many people can’t even take a trip in their car without following GPS navigation instructions, even to places they go to regularly. GPS technology is probably the biggest reason why riders would need a cell phone holder on their motorcycle, but there’s more to it than that. Here are a few good reasons why having a phone mount for motorcycle riders could be important:

GPS Navigation

Let’s start with the obvious one. Smart phones make excellent GPS devices, and thanks to the likes of Google Maps, regular satellite navigation products are becoming redundant. Having a motorcycle handlebar mounted GPS device allows motorcyclists to follow directions in an unobtrusive way, without taking their attention off of the road in front. The benefits of GPS navigation are obvious: they prevent you from getting lost, keep you informed of the traffic situation, and provide alternative routes in case of obstructions. Having GPS at your fingertips when you’re on the road is invaluable.

Performance Tracking

There are plenty of interesting smart phone apps out there that are useful to motorcyclists. Have you ever wanted to monitor your speed more closely on a journey, or calculate distances and times? Apps that clock average speeds and distances traveled are great for calculating fuel economy, and apps that measure acceleration and speed are excellent for learning how well you and your motorcycle can actually perform. This is a great reason to invest in a phone or GPS mount.

Entertainment

Kind of. You don’t want to be live streaming the football or the MotoGP while you’re out on a ride, but a little bit of background music pumped to your wireless headphones could be a nice way to enhance a ride. Some riders are vehemently against listening to music while riding, but others are quite open to it – providing that they can hear it over the engine noise! Having a phone mount installed makes operating an audio device nice and easy, and eliminates a lot of the danger you’d encounter fumbling in your pocket for the skip track and volume up buttons!

Communications

The most important function of motorcycle phone holders is to give a motorcyclist access to their phone. While apps are great, and we love listening to a bit of music, a phone’s primary function is for communication. We’re not saying that you should be using your phone to make phone calls while you’re riding, but the ability to see your screen and note an incoming call is very useful. If it’s an important call, you’ll be able to pull over and answer it. If it’s not, you can ignore – but you’ll know that it’s not important before deciding to pull over in the first place though!

Types Of Motorcycle Phone Mounts

Master Cylinder Phone Mount

Now you know why it’s a good idea to invest in a proper phone mount for your motorcycle, what kind should you buy? There are loads of different types of mounts on the market, but which type does what, and which one might be the best motorcycle phone mount for you? Here are the most common types of mounts that you can by:

Clamp Handlebar Mounts

Handlebar mounted phone holders that use a clamp grip to attach are probably the most popular kind of mounts available. The vast majority of these products are made from metal or a strong plastic, utilizing a u-bolt design or similar to hold the mount in place. They usually have a short stem with a ball and socket joint. These holders usually grab onto the phone with a vice-like clamp, or using an elasticated silicone net. Mounts like these are very strong and hard wearing.

Silicone Strap Handlebar Mounts

These universal phone mount setups feature a watchstrap style fastener made from silicone that loops around your handlebars and is locked into place when fastened. Like the regular clamp-type holders, these also usually include an articulate joint that offers full 360 degree movement. Silicone has some advantages over other materials, since it helps to absorb shock and vibrations, and it’s completely water resistant. Plus, silicone products are very easy to clean.

Master Cylinder Mounts

We haven’t included any on this list, but there are special phone mounts that can be attached via a master cylinder. They feature special base plates that can be bolted on top or underneath of your brake fluid reservoir. Since they’re bolted directly onto one of your bike’s key components, you can be sure that your phone holder won’t come loose and send your phone flying down the road. Phone mounts like this are ideal for motorcycles that have limited handlebar space, or if you have an already crowded dash with other devices or riding add-ons installed.

Mirror Stem Mounts

Like the brake cylinder kind mentioned above, mirror stem mounted phone holders are perfect for motorcycles where space is a premium. Mirror stem mounts come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some feature clamps that simply attach to your existing mirror stems. Others are more advanced and actually replace your whole mirror mounting clamp on your handlebar, forgoing the factory mount in place of a new one that has the ability to hold a phone, with space for you to screw your mirror back in to.

Windscreen Mounts

Motorcycles with large windscreens may benefit from windscreen mounted phone holders. These kind of mounts are pretty good but they rely on a strong windscreen, which very few motorcycles have. Plus, these mounts may not be as sturdy as conventional handlebar mounts or other types. It might be better to leave your windscreen mounted phone holder in your car instead, along with your cup holder and aircon.

Other types of clever phone mounts do exist, but they’re not as popular as the others mentioned, or they’re part of another kind of product as an add-on. For example, many tank bags come with a see-through plastic pocket that acts as a suitable phone mount…but it’s not really a motorcycle phone mount. It’s just a bag with a useful pocket. There are even some magnetic phone mounts for sale too. Still, it’s imperative to know what product types are out there so that you can buy the best motorcycle handlebar phone mount for your needs. So what else do you need to look out for?

Other Factors To Consider

Material

Motorcycles travel at high speeds, get buffeted by the wind, take hard hits from passing insects and road debris, and occasionally they fall over too. That’s why it’s essential to buy a motorcycle phone mount that can handle the rough and tumble that goes with motorcycling. When searching, look for products that are made of tough, durable materials like stainless steel, zinc alloys, aluminum, or ABS plastics. A tough product should be made out of a tough material. High quality silicone and rubber can work just as well, providing that it’s designed correctly. Make sure you find a product tough enough to get the job done.

Shock-Absorption

It’s important to have a sturdy phone holder because of the bumps and shakes that a motorcycle makes, but if your holder can’t actively absorb some of those shocks and smooth out vibrations, you’ll have a hard time using your phone. It’ll be hard to read the screen, and navigating the interface will be tricky. That’s why it’s important to find a phone mount that can mitigate some of those bumps, shakes, and vibrations. Silicone and rubber is great at absorbing shock and vibration.

Sizing

This is arguably one of the most important things to take into consideration when shopping for a new motorcycle or bicycle phone mount: the sizing. Generally, there are two sizes you need to pay attention to. Firstly, you need to look at the product’s handlebar compatibility. Most clamp-type mounts will have a minimum and a maximum handlebar diameter for them to work effectively. Make sure your bike fits these requirements before you buy. And of course, there’s the second important measurement: the phone sizes that your mount can handle.

Most of the motorcycle phone mounts listed online boast that they’re universal. And they are, to a degree. They probably can fit most phones. However, it’s always best to look at the maximum dimensions that a mount can handle before investing. And take a look at the minimum dimensions too – you don’t want to buy a mount that’s too big for your phone!

Customer Reviews

Finally, you should take the time to read as many phone mount reviews as you can about the products you’re considering buying. This should go without saying. Still, it’s always best to take a glance at a cross-section of reviews to try and learn what a product is really like. Usually, you’ll be able to find a review from a customer with the same kind of motorcycle as you, and with the same kind of needs. If that reviewer had a positive experience, the chances that you will too are quite high. It’s important to read the bad reviews as well as the good reviews though to really get an idea about the phone holder you’re thinking of buying.

Tips On Using A Cell Phone Mount

  • There are a few things to consider when mounting your phone. You don’t want it getting in the way of your hands, or getting in the way of your dashboard. If you can’t see and read your speedo, then you’re mounting your phone in the wrong position.
  • Double check that your phone is compatible with your chosen phone mount before you click the buy button. Most manufacturers have a full and up to date compatibility list available online somewhere. Check that out first before spending your money on something that might not work with your phone!
  • Talking of sizes, it’s always a good idea to see if your phone still fits into your desired motorcycle phone mount with a protective case on. If you can put your phone in there with a case on, it might be worth investing in a new protective case while you’re on your spending spree. A good case can help to protect your phone from the elements, mitigate shock and vibration, and prevent unnecessary cracks and scratches later on.
  • After installation, it’s a good idea to give your new mount a little road test. Take your bike for a slow cruise along a nice and smooth sealed road. At slow speeds, you can get a rough idea of how your mount will perform at higher speeds, and you’ll be able to make any adjustments necessary before screaming down the freeway. You don’t want to learn that your phone holder is no good at 80 mph. It’s nicer to learn that at about 10 mph instead.
  • Finally, just because your phone is in front of you it doesn’t mean that you have to use it all the time. Texting while riding, or punching addresses into Google Maps, or checking your Instagram, means that you’re not giving the road the attention and respect that it deserves. Just because you’ve got a smart phone it doesn’t mean that you can be a dumb rider. Think smart, think safe.

Motorcycle Phone Holder FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use a bicycle phone mount on my motorcycle?

A: It all depends on the manufacturer’s advice. If something is good enough for a motorcycle, it’s almost certainly good enough for a bicycle. The other way around though? That’s debatable. Generally, a lot of these devices are generic, and they’ve been built to work for motorcycles, ATVs, quads, and scooters, so you can probably get away with it. We’d recommend that you give it a test ride at slow speeds first though, just to see how well it can handle the speed and vibration of your motorcycle. If in doubt, don’t take any risks, and follow the manufacturer’s advice instead.

Q: Where should I put my motorcycle phone mount?

A: Somewhere where it won’t be obstructing your field of vision, nor obstructing any other important instrumentation or motorcycle controls. Handlebar mounted phone holders usually fit nicely between the handlebar clamps, underneath your dash, or next to your left or right hand grips. The best place to attach your phone mount will depend on your handlebar layout and your personal preference. As long as it’s not blocking something important, anywhere should be fine. Use a bit of common sense and you’ll find the right spot to install your new device in no time.

Q: How to attach GPS to a motorcycle?

A: A dedicated motorcycle GPS system will come equipped with a specially designed clamp and cradle that was made specifically for the purpose of attaching the device to your dashboard. If you’re using a proper GPS device like something from a brand like Garmin, there will be specific mounts that you can buy to make the process as easy as possible. If you’re just using your phone for navigation, you can simply buy any motorcycle phone mount like those listed above, and attach it in the right place. Trying to mount a GPS device with an incompatible phone holder isn’t recommended at all.

Q: How long will a phone mount last?

A: Providing that you give your phone mount the proper care and attention that it needs, and you’re using it properly, then there’s no reason why your phone mount won’t last indefinitely. Make sure you care for it and clean it as per the manufacturer’s guidelines, and don’t put any unnecessary stress on any of the integral parts, and it should be fine. Some mounts are equipped with perishable items that will need to be replaced though. Silicone nets and straps will lose their elasticity and will be pulled out of shape eventually. However, as long as you take care of the product and replace any worn out parts, there’s no reason why your phone mount won’t last forever!
