A Chance to Grab a Seriously Rare Subaru Impreza 22B
This Rare Subaru Would Make An Unusual And Unexpected Collector’s Piece
Updated October 2, 2018
A 1998 Subaru Impreza might not be one of the first cars you think of as being something of a “must have” for collectors, but this is a very special Scooby that’s about to go under the auction hammer. This is one of just 400 22B models built by Subaru to celebrate its 40th anniversary, and it may have even greater kudos for some prospective buyers as it was once owned by former WBC, IBF, and WBO featherweight boxing world champion, Naseem Hamed.
The really big deal about this car though, is that the 22B Impreza was the closest thing you could get to a road-legal version of the all-conquering WRC rally car that was driven by the late, great Colin McRae at the time.
One of the first things that set this rare model apart from a regular Impreza is the flared bodywork that’s reminiscent of the WRC cars of the time. However, the real magic happens underneath the bodywork. The engine was bored out to make it a 2.2-liter unit instead of the standard 2.0. Then there are the specially forged pistons and other internal components that were unique to this model, which worked with the car’s super short gearing and beefed up drive and prop shafts to make it a really special car to drive.
If you just look at the power figures you could be forgiven for being pretty underwhelmed, especially by today’s standards. Power was dictated at the time by official restrictions, which is why it was limited to 280 horsepower and developed 267 lb.-ft. of torque. However, anyone that’s familiar with Japanese sport cars will know there’s an awful lot more to them than just the size of the engine and the power they produce.
At current exchange rates, this particular 22B is expected to command somewhere in the region of $87,000 and $101,000. That’s not too ridiculous for such a sought-after car in as-new condition and with just 2,500 miles on the clock, especially as it would have cost close to $60,000 when it was new.
