A Pet Owner’s Guide to Automobile Safety

Updated August 24, 2013

For many, pets are more than just furry companions; they’re considered an important part of the family. For this reason, some people like to bring pets along on car rides instead of leaving them at home. Whether going on a short drive or a long road trip, it’s imperative to keep safety in mind. Below are a few car safety tips every pet parent should be aware of:

•Perhaps the most important thing to remember about car safety for pets is never to leave an animal in a parked car. It doesn’t have to be terribly hot outside to turn a car into a virtual oven, putting pets at serious risk for heat stroke and death within minutes. Parking in the shade or cracking a window isn’t enough to protect pets. This danger also applies to the winter months, when cars trap in cold and can cause animals to freeze to death. If you’re running errands, it’s best to just leave pets safely at home.

•Make sure your pet is safe in a properly secured carrier or strapped in with a seatbelt especially meant for pets. This not only cuts down on distractions for the driver, but also stops the animal from flying through the air in the event of an accident, which can be a dangerous situation for all of the passengers in the vehicle.

•As much as dogs may enjoy it, don’t let your canine companion ride with his head sticking out of the car window. It’s not safe for children to stick their arms out of the window of a moving vehicle, so apply the same logic to your dog’s safety.

•If you’re going on a longer car ride, it’s important to plan ahead. Make sure your pet is supplied with a toy or another comfort item if being in the car is unfamiliar or stressful. Be prepared with a dish and bottled water and take plenty of water breaks. Also, try not to feed your pet a large meal right before getting in the car to prevent motion sickness.

•If your pet gets anxious during car rides, consider a natural supplement to ease nerves. If your pet’s anxiety is severe and car trips are sometimes necessary, consult with your veterinarian for advice.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll make car travel with pets as easy and stress-free as possible for everyone involved!

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.

At Autowise, we envision ourselves as not just a automobile blog or an automobile news website, instead we see our website as a platform to connect all automobile enthusiast and provide them with all the information they need.
