BYD and Zhonghua/Brilliance Taxis!
I dont know if the astute China Car Times readers realise, but China Car Times is based in Qingdao, Shandong province in the east coast of China. Sure – we dont live in a megatropolis city like Shanghai or Beijing, but we like it this way. Over the weekend, China Car Times was out shopping with our balls and chains errrr, wives when we saw a BYD taxi and on sunday we saw a Zhonghua/Brilliance taxi both here in Qingdao. What does this mean? Well, traditionally (as in the last ten to fifteen years) the good majority of Chinas taxi fleet (i.e. 99%) have been VW Jettas, but as these fleets of Jettas get old and really tatty, taxi companies up and down China are looking for cheap, cost effective work horses like the VW Jetta was, and it seems that the taxi companies are starting to look closer to home rather than looking at foreign cars. A taxi needs to be running all day, upto 24 hours a day straight in China for 365 days a year for 10 years at the most – woah – what kind of car can tolerate that? Not many, but if the various Chinese taxi companies believe that BYD and Zhonghua can cut the mustard just as well as a VW Jetta, then China Car Times is impressed.
