Can Mercedes Win the 2012 Formula 1 Title?

Updated August 24, 2013

2012 has been a racing season full of surprises in F1, most noticeably for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team with Nico Rosberg climbing the ranks, currently sitting in 5th – 21 points behind the leading Lewis Hamilton. All eyes, however, are on the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher and how he performs at Valencia’s proving ground this weekend.
In an interview with Ross Brawn on the Mercedes YouTube channel his concerns with Schumacher’s misfortune, having retired five out of seven races due to car problems, have been “a huge frustration”. In light of this, Brawn is convinced that they have much more to give.

A View to Win

Looking at the grid positions, both racers have started races in major point scoring positions on more than one occasion, proving that Mercedes’ drivers are fully capable of winning. Providing Brawn’s team sort out the problems with the car, there is likelihood that Mercedes could take a fair few podium positions at least.

European GP 2012

With the European GP just around the corner, Brawn feels this race could start the end of Schumacher’s terrible luck. Historically, Schumacher has won at the Valencia circuit on three occasions between 2001 and 2004 for both Ferrari and Williams teams. Under the wing of the Mercedes team could this be the comeback Schumacher’s fans have been waiting for?

One to Bet On?

Rosberg’s win at China pulled Mercedes into the limelight along with the problems Schumacher’s car experienced in the same race. Their performances as drivers, combined with the betting odds for the season (Rosberg to win 8/1, Schumacher to win 10/1) are good indicators suggesting a strong season for the Mercedes team. The only thing stopping them at the moment is the inability to get Schumacher’s car over the finish line.

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.
