755-HP Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Convertible Moving As Fast As The Coupe

Structure So Strong It Did Not Need Improvements

Published December 11, 2017

Last time we saw the the Corvette ZR1 Convertible was in 1970. Now, there is a new one. Almost 50 years later. It is a car so sensational it makes me pose some serious questions:
Ferrari 488 Spider?
Audi R8 Spyder?
Lamborghini Huracan Spyder?

Although these cars do have a healthy amount of refinement and aristocratic European image, they do lack the Corvette ZR1 swank and glitter. Yet, let’s forget about the swank and glitter a bit. Why is that I can compare the ‘Vette with the European monsters at all?

The Corvette ZR1 Convertible is the ultimate representation of the American sports car extremes.

“The new Corvette ZR1 convertible is a supercar in all respects,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. “Few others can challenge the ZR1 convertible’s power and speed while offering the exhilaration of top-down motoring.”

Same LT5 For The Corvette ZR1 Coupe and the Corvette ZR1 Cabriolet

Available with the newly tuned 6.2-liter engine named the LT5, the car has an engine developing 755hp and 715 lb-ft of torque. These numbers do say a lot. Not only does this makes the Corvette ZR1 more powerful compared with any of the European competition, but it also makes this the most powerful Corvette of all time. Of course, the same goes for the Coupe and the Convertible.

What is not the same between the two is the position of seatbelts and the rear end which had to accommodate folding top. Interestingly enough, the Chevrolet did not need to improve the structure although the ‘Vette ZR1 lost its roof. This, thankfully, meant that the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Convertible does not weigh like the Moon. With only 60 pounds more compared with the Coupe (tips the scales at 3,560 lb), the ZR1 Convertible makes for a rather well-executed topless. And a fast one. Chevy noted the top speed of 200+ mph.

Acceleration?

0-60 mph in a ted less than 3 seconds. Awesome.

As it is with the coupe, the 2019 Corvette ZR1 Convertible can be had with a seven-speed manual or the ZF eight-speed automatic. The first for the convertible ‘Vette. Considering that the Chevrolet did not actually change a lot compared with the Corvette Coupe we already wrote about, it is obvious that we have here a car equally capable with and without the roof. You know what, that is the trait Pagani McLaren’saren machines share with the latest Corvette ZR1.

Would You Do It Before The Europeans?

So, is it a supercar and should you do it before you do Ferrari, Lambo or something else? If the performance numbers did not convince you, know that this car starts at $123,995 (prices include destination charge, but exclude tax, title and other dealer fees). Sure, their resale value will drop like a ton of bricks, but you cannot have more capable machine for less. Actually, so capable, I would not be surprised if it managed to do a sub-seven second run at the Nurburgring.

After all, this is what the officials have to say about it:

“The ZR1 convertible is a no-compromise supercar,” said Corvette Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter. “Thanks to the strong structure, the suspension tuning between coupe and convertible models is identical, meaning the ZR1 convertible offers the same benchmark performance, including a top speed of over 200 mph.”

About Safet Satara

I do not have spare time. All there is is car time. 12 years and counting. I am a Central European gearhead, but you are probably thinking - aaa a disposable Borg drone! Well, actually, I like to dress up like James Bond too. The only thing I need to be him is an Aston Martin (and I love DBS more than DB5 because, reasons). That's something I guess.
