The Ducati Superleggera Arrives In The USA!

If your name was on the Ducati Superleggera waiting list, then the time has come!

The wait is finally over for the lucky few people that managed to get on the waiting list for the all new Ducati Superleggera – because they’ve finally touched down in the USA. Only a handful of people are ever going to be lucky enough to own one of these $80,000 mega machines around the world, but at least a couple of them will be riding around on American roads. The grand unveiling for the USA took place at AMS Ducati Dallas, as the first customer’s model finally arrived stateside.

With only 500 units produced, the new Ducati Superleggera is quite the exclusive motorcycle. Not only is it restricted to a limited production run, it also boasts some of the most cutting-edge technology available to the likes of us mere mortals, and it also comes with a few perks that even the MotoGP models aren’t equipped with too.

That’s right: the Ducati Superleggera 1299 has an industry-first all carbon fiber frame, which weighs in at a pitifully lightweight of 2.6 kg (5.7 lbs). The swing arm only weighs a ridiculous 4.1 kg (9 lbs). The rear subframe doesn’t even weigh a single kilo (1.9 lbs). And when it’s all assembled, the whole damn motorcycle only weighs 344 lbs in total! So, it’s a pretty special thing. But there’s more.

Thanks to some impressive engine work, the Ducati Superleggera shoots out a rather impressive 215 hp, which can be upgraded to a tasty 200 hp with the addition of an upgraded Akrapovic exhaust. In terms of power to weight ratios, you’re going to struggle to do better than the 1299 Superleggera. It is the most powerful twin cylinder of all time, so they say. And it’s street legal and Euro-regs compliant too.

Naturally, the motorcycle also comes with an advanced electronics package, in fact, it’s the most advanced of any Ducati available. It features all of the classics, as well as a six axis inertial measurement unit which controls the slide and spin of the rear tire, and because of the slightly strict MotoGP rules and regulations, it makes this Ducati more advanced than the current Desmocedici racer you see on the grid. It’s a technicality, but by god, it’s a nice one…if you happen to have a Ducati Superleggera on order. If not, I suppose it’s a nice bit of trivia but that’s about it.

Other dealerships will be getting their hands on these Superleggeras, but there aren’t many left that haven’t been spoken for. If you think you’ve got what it takes to pull the pin on one of these glorious motorcycles, you’d better act fast.

About Joe Appleton

I’ve done a bit of work here and there in the industry – I’ve even ridden a few bikes for actual money but what it comes down to is this: I ride bikes, build bikes and occasionally crash ‘em too. I like what I like but that certainly doesn’t make my opinion any more valid than yours…
