The Energica Ego Superbike – Finally On Sale!

The Energica Ego Electric Motorcycle Is Finally On Sale In North America

Updated August 9, 2018

After more than a couple of years of talk, setbacks and other delays, the Energica Ego super bike is finally going on sale. Energica are set to become one of the biggest players on the electric motorcycle scene, and finally they’ve found their first dealership to fly their flag. The Italian company has gone into agreement with a Swiss dealership to kick off their assault on the electric two wheeler market. E-Performance, owned by Adrian von Büren has risen to the challenge.

Energica have been keeping pretty quiet about their future plans to expand and no other dealerships have yet been named but we’re pretty sure that after they’ve tested the European waters, it won’t be long until they’re ready to expand into North America.

The Energica Ego Electric Motorcycle Has Arrived

So, if you’re still clueless about what the Energica Ego superbike is, here’s the lowdown: with it’s roots already sunk deep into the history of Italian racing, the Energica Ego is set to be the world first ‘proper’ electric super bike that ticks all of the right boxes. It’s been made by the same people who have previously delivered high performance Formula One racing machines and Le Mans 24 hours rides for the past 40 years. The Ego promises massive performance with zero emissions – but does it have it? According to Kevin Duke of it handles and performs like a modern 600cc sports bike, so the answer is yes. Looking at the printed statistics, it’s hard to deny the Ego’s magic: “It has 100kW (136 hp of instantaneous power reaching from 4900 rpm to 10500 rpm and a torque of 195 Nm ranging from 0 rpm to 4700 rpm.”

The oil cooled motor is capable of accelerating from 0 – 60 mph in just 3 seconds and boasts a top speed of around 150 mph, which is more than enough for anyone. All of that uninterrupted acceleration is complimented with a top of the range braking system from Brembo and ABS supplied by Bosch. Sure, all of these specs are tantamount to nothing if the battery life isn’t up to scratch. Most electric motorcycle debates always revert to the battery, and Energica have got a serious response.

The battery has a maximum range of 160 km, depending on your riding style – this might not sound that far but it is, especially when compared with other electric performance machines. To make things even better, Energica have also given customers the option of investing in a high-power charger which will fill the battery up to 80 percent in a staggering 30 minutes (Yeah, 30 minutes!). The standard charger can fill the battery to 90% in 3.5 hours, which is still an incredible charging time, given the bikes overall performance.

Of course, like all things, there is a downside, and it’s the price: when the Energica hits the US, it’s likely to cost around $34,000 PLUS taxes, which is a lot of money to spend, especially considering the value of the Victory Empulse, which is set at around the $20k marker. Having said that, you can’t make a direct price comparison, because the machines are so different from one another: one is designed for speed and sports, while the majority of its closest competitors, quite simply, are not.

Since our last feature on an electric motorcycle, the Victory Empulse, was met with mixed reviews, we’re opening up the floor by asking a direct question: Electric motorcycles – would you or wouldn’t you? Simple as that.
