New Ford Focus RS Edition Even Faster Through The Bends

LSD At The Front For The New Focus RS Edition

Published October 8, 2017

The Ford Focus RS Edition gives us a few new toys to play with in the cool world of hot hatchbacks. Not only does it offer more interesting personalization options, the hot-hatch now handles a new front Quaife LSD.

The newly-developed limited-slip diff suited to work on the front wheels has been perfectly matched with the new Focus RS tech. It works well with the RS all-wheel drive, dynamic torque vectoring system, and torque vectoring control.

Additionally improving the front wheel drive system and giving the hatch better front wheel grip ought to have a dramatic impact on the driving characteristics. The new Quaife differential has a few major advantages over the old system. That one functioned by braking the wheel with the least grip making the diff send power to the other wheel. It worked, but the system is not something we could call fast or refined. All-new limited slip diff at the front works faster meaning that the driver will be able to accelerate from the bend much earlier.

“For hardcore driving enthusiasts, the additional mechanical grip offered by the Quaife LSD will make it even easier to carry speed through a corner on the track, and maximize acceleration on the way out,” says Ford of Europe performance director Leo Roeks.

“The new setup also delivers greater mechanical stability and control when braking hard, and will help drivers set the car up for power-slides using Drift Mode,” said Roeks. “The Focus RS Edition takes our ‘fun to drive’ philosophy to a new level for an everyday road car.”

2018 Ford Focus RS Edition Takes Hot-Hatch Idea to the Next Level

With even better power delivery, the Focus RS Edition is a definite improvement over the previous iterations of the car. Don’t be scared about it losing some features; it won’t. The renowned Drift Mode is still very much at play here. Despite the front Quaife LSD, the four-wheel drive system is still able to send up to 70 percent of power to the back wheels. Spectacular drifts? Enabled.

The new RS has also received some minor cosmetic upgrades to help differentiate it from the previous model.

Ford Focus RS Spoiler

You can find here a matt black roof, black door mirrors, and black roof spoiler. Also, note the cool blue RS logos on the spoiler, black 19-inch wheels, and Recaro seats with Nitrous Blue detailing. Other blue details and rich carbon fiber trim for the inside are available as well.

Ford Focus RS Wing Mirror

While the car is already available in the UK and on the Old Continent as a whole, we did not actually get a confirmation that it reached the States. Even if it does, you can expect a  grand premium over the standard model.

About Safet Satara

I do not have spare time. All there is is car time. 12 years and counting. I am a Central European gearhead, but you are probably thinking - aaa a disposable Borg drone! Well, actually, I like to dress up like James Bond too. The only thing I need to be him is an Aston Martin (and I love DBS more than DB5 because, reasons). That's something I guess.
