Ford Unveils the Escort in Shanghai
Published April 20, 2013
Shanghai has been a classy event for Ford, they launched the new Mondeo and showed off its entire new China range which is flanked by three SUVs: the Kuga, Ecosport and Explorer. They also launched a new brown car with a nameplate that is already well known within the auto industry; the Escort.
Depending on which side of the Atlantic Ocean you grew up on, the Escort name will mean a very different thing. The European model was a lightweight powerful, British built vehicle that came in a range of three or five door options and decent sized engines. Over in the USA the car was an economy crap box built between 1981 and 2003.
We have heard rumor of a new B-Hatch from Ford in the Chinese market for some time, however we would have never have guessed at a rival of the iconic (to European) Escort nameplate to satisfy lower income consumers. The Escort will likely be placed below the Focus but above the Fiesta and will be an entry level model with a price of around 90,000RMB when it finally launches either late this year or in early 2014.
