German 2016 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S Is The SUV That Crashed The Nurburgring

Back in July 2014, Range Rover announced that they’ve accomplished an astonishing feat – they’ve lapped the ‘ring in 8 minutes and 14 seconds with their newest Range Rover Sport. That is, we admit, a rather impressive feat, a feat that could not be done with a Honda NSX 25 years ago, or even with a BMW M3 15 years ago. The Range Rover Sport is a wonderful car, but the Germans will not be beaten on their own turf. Half a year after the Range Rover Sport set its record, Beemer sent its X6 M which bettered the time by a whopping 9 seconds and now, a stock Cayenne Turbo S hit the ‘Ring and showed the world what an SUV is supposed to be.
This particular version was just released in Detroit at the NAIAS. The Cayenne Turbo S is a highly powered (or to say overpowered) Porsche with a redesigned 4,8 liter engine, better exhaust, a few aerodynamic touches and bigger brakes which enable it to possibly be the best SUV that has ever roamed the Earth. A few days ago, this Porsche was kicking it on the ‘Ring, where it clocked the time of 7 minutes and 59 seconds. Let that sink in for a while.
Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series, Aston Martin DBS, Audi R8, BMW M3 (E92), BMW Z8, Audi RS4… The cars whose names you’ve just read are all slower than the 2016 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and yes, many of them were, or are the best in their classes even today.
Despite being the first series production SUV that lapped 20 kilometers of Green Hell in less than 8 minutes, the Cayenne Turbo S really is a technological masterpiece which moves the boundary higher than ever before. Land Rover will certainly have to wait for the next generation of their Range Rover Sport to try to break the eight minute barrier and right now, the only SUV that could threaten the Cayenne is the new Mercedes GLE 63 AMG S Coupe.
This feat was possible mainly due to the reengineered 4,8 liter V8 engine. With higher boost, some tweaks on the ECU and better cooling, the engine was tuned to produce 570 HP (20 more than before) and 800 Nm of torque (50 more than before). Honestly, that is not a large upgrade, but the Cayenne Turbo S gained much more than that. The engine develops its maximum power and torque figures in much a wider range and the result is the acceleration to 62 mph in just 4,1 seconds. Maximum speed is also raised a bit to 176 mph (though Porsche officials did not say anything about the speed limiter, we suspect that there is one).
Apart from the upgraded engine, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S received PTM (Porsche Traction Management) which ensures that the wheel with the most grip gets most power at all costs. That said, we known that the Cayenne is actually a rear wheel drive based vehicle, but thanks to its smart four wheel drive system up to 100 percent of power can be transferred only to the front wheels if needed (neat, isn’t it). Furthermore, with PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control) and PTV Plus (Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus), the whole car can be adjusted for a specific role – for a race, or for a comfortable trip, whatever suits you.
Even though we still tend to laugh when someone mentions race and SUVs in the same sentence, the sheer power, brute force and equipment in this car make us think that the Cayenne Turbo S can be a formidable car for an occasional track trip. It has enormous (420 mm front) carbon ceramic brakes, which do not fade and it has special spoilers which provide a bit more downforce than before. All of these features are commonly associated with sports cars and it seems we have one here.
