Will Honda Present A New CB1000R For 2018?

And if they do, will a new CB1000R look like this?

Updated August 23, 2018

The word on the street is that Honda are planning on unveiling a brand new CB1000R at one of the big trade shows this year – and it’s about time too. Since the venerable Honda CB1000R first arrived on the scene back in 2008…not a lot else happened with it. It hasn’t had any real significant upgrades since then, and it has definitely fallen way behind its competition. Hopefully, Honda are going to right that wrong this year and give us something new to talk about – but it’s all rumor at the moment. Thankfully, the guys over at the UK’s MCN magazine have taken the rumor seriously and have whipped up a nice concept sketch of what they think a new CB1000R could look like. And it’s perfect, if you wanted our opinion.

A New CB1000R For 2018?

Honda CB1000R

Whether you like the current iteration of the Honda CB1000R or not, you’ve got to admit that it’s pretty dated. In terms of performance, it’s nowhere near the rest of the players in the segment. Powered by an old CBR1000RR engine, the CB1000R only puts out a mere 130hp. A mere 130 hp might sound harsh, but when you’re weighing it up against the likes of the Yamaha FZ-10 (which boasts 160 hp) or the BMW S1000R (which shoots out 165 hp), 130 horses just isn’t enough. Now Honda could easily change that. However, being Honda, we’re not expecting them to crank up the horsies, but rather squeeze some extra oompf out of a more modern CBR engine by adding a lighter frame and suspension package than the likes of the BMW or Yamaha. Think of something in the 200 kg wet ball park, but with something around 155 hp.

Hopefully, Honda would also address some other important issues while they’re at it. After the engine, their main priority should be focusing on updating the electronics and riding aids to bring it in line with the rest of the segment. More advanced traction control, wheelie control, torque control, and a ride by wire throttle should go without saying, with the option of a quickshifter too. It wouldn’t  take much to turn the CB1000F into something really quite special…and if Honda decided to borrow a few cheeky design elements from its Flat Tracker CB1100TR concept, it would be one of the most beautiful things on the market too.

Remember The CB1100TR Concept?

We’re guessing that’s where MCN’s digital artists took a few cues from when putting the top image together. If you’re not familiar with the CB1100TR, we’ve stuck the image above. It’s easily one of the most attractive Honda’s we’ve seen in a long time…and while it’s only a concept, we’re not going to let Honda fool us. The X-ADV was “only” a concept. The new Africa Twin was “only” a concept, too. Even though Honda have explained that there was nothing more to come from the CB1100TR, we’re not ready to accept that.

With a bit of luck, it might have just been the seed that sprouts the next gen Honda CB1000R. And that’s what we’re hoping to see later on this year.
