Ken Block Nearly Lost It While Filming Awesome Toyo Climbkhana On Pikes Peak (Video)

Four wheel drive on the 1,400 hp Hoonicorn helped him avoid a disaster

Published October 11, 2017

As you may know, Ken Block and his custom Hoonicorn 1965 Ford Mustang with 1,400hp have been part of some astonishing Gymkhana videos in the past. Now, however, with a little help from Toyo Tires, Gymkhana became Climbkhana. Ken Block and his 1,400hp Mustang tackled Pikes Peak – the most demanding and possibly the most dangerous hill climb in the world. Luckily for us, they also filmed it and created an astonishing YouTube viral video.

Making movies like this does not only involve a whole lot of tries to capture the right angle, but also requires the driver to be at their best. If Block wasn’t at his best, he and his Mustang would fell off a cliff. Literally.

This 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR V2 Is Lucky And Capable

If you already watched the video, I encourage you to replay the part at 5 minutes and 10 seconds mark. There you will see Ken Block reaching very close to the cliff in one of the most stunning drifts ever performed. He almost fell off a cliff with the Mustang. Actually, creative chief Brian Scotto said to Ken Block at one point that it would be rather cool if he could go a bit deeper at one part of the track. And he did. He went so deep with the back side of the Mustang that he nearly fell off. Luckily, the all-wheel-drive custom Ford Performance Mustang was up to the task and survived one of the most stunning pieces of footage we have ever seen.

At this very point, a racer lost control of his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and crashed back in 2012. You can watch the horrific incident down below. Luckily, the roll cage did its job protecting the driver and the co-driver. The same could have happened to Ken Block if he did not have so much power, AWD and extremely grippy tires with his 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR V2.

Pikes Peak has been rather important for all fast drivers throughout its history. In fact, it may be that the Climbkhana took inspiration from Ari Vatanen who set a record time at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 1988 with the awesome Peugeot 405 T16. Jean Louis Mourey, a French film director made a short movie about it dubbed the Climb Dance. You can watch it below as well. It is a treat.

About Safet Satara

I do not have spare time. All there is is car time. 12 years and counting. I am a Central European gearhead, but you are probably thinking - aaa a disposable Borg drone! Well, actually, I like to dress up like James Bond too. The only thing I need to be him is an Aston Martin (and I love DBS more than DB5 because, reasons). That's something I guess.
