The KTM RC16 Track-Only Model For 2018 – $105k+!

For $105k You Could Own The Track-Only KTM RC16!

Updated August 16, 2018

There’s still a degree of hope that KTM will be giving the RC8 a long awaited update, but for now it looks like you’re out of luck – unless you’ve got cash to burn. Since KTM decided to jump head first into the MotoGP, we expected that they’d bring an update to their RC8 platform, something along the lines of a consumer ready and wallet friendly, watered down version of the RC16 prototype racer. We were on the right track, but it seems that we were wrong. For now at least.

That’s because KTM have recently announced plans to release a track-only version of the RC16. KTM’s boss Stefan Pierer told Speedweek magazine that the firm has plans to bring the RC16 to the masses…in the form of a super-exclusive track only bike that only the wealthiest of riders could possible afford. I may be coming across as a little put out by this news, but I was really hoping that a real consumer version would be on the cards…But alas no – however, I’m not too disheartened. It might be a bit too steep for my wallet, but it’s a step in the right direction…

Anyway, the plan is that KTM’s RC16 will be a limited production run with over 100 units being produced, and each of those units will boast 240 hp peak power figure from the 90 degree V4 engine, which fall short from its MotoGP sibling’s stats, but is more than enough for mere mortals. The overall idea is to make it as close to a MotoGP bike as possible, but within the realms of being reasonable.

Mr. Pierer was quoted saying: “We want to build at least 100 bikes and also offer this product at a very affordable price. This motorcycle will not receive any road approval, it is only intended for use on track. We want it to be as close to the MotoGP bikes as possible. 270bhp will, of course, not be available for a customer bike, but 240bhp should be available reliably.”

That sort of technology doesn’t come cheap though – as we’ve seen before with Honda’s RCV213V-S. KTM have said that they’re planning on undercutting Honda in the price department, but even then they’re still hinting at a price point somewhere between €100,000 and €120,000. In US dollar, that’s something in the $105k – $125k ball park…which is hardly affordable for the average track day enthusiast.

We don’t know exactly what else you’re going to get for your money, such as the suspension, electronics package, or anything else, but we do know that KTM have plans to get the first units on sale for 2018…so we’re probably going to have to wait until 2017’s big trade shows for more information. Hopefully they’ll unveil the track-only RC16 alongside a real road going model…hopefully being the operative word there.

About Joe Appleton

I’ve done a bit of work here and there in the industry – I’ve even ridden a few bikes for actual money but what it comes down to is this: I ride bikes, build bikes and occasionally crash ‘em too. I like what I like but that certainly doesn’t make my opinion any more valid than yours…
