Large Vehicles: Are They Even Worth It?

Updated September 29, 2013

There are a number of different reasons to consider buying a larger vehicle. Maybe you need a larger car for work. Maybe your family is growing and you need a vehicle with more room. A larger car or truck may be necessary if you need to tow a boat, recreational vehicle or other large items. There are several points to consider when deciding which vehicle is right for your needs.

Gas Mileage
Since the cost of gas is constantly increasing, it is essential to know what type of gas mileage the prospective new vehicle will get. You don’t want any surprises. Imagine how shocked you would be if you didn’t consider the cost of gas when buying your new vehicle. Since you’re looking at something larger, you must take into consideration that it will use more gas and this could be a significant cost.

Insurance costs for larger vehicles is generally more expensive than that of smaller, more efficient cars. You must call your insurance company with information on the new vehicle so that you can get an accurate quote on insuring your new car or truck. You would be surprised at how many people actually buy a new car without checking on the cost of insurance first. This is because you can call your insurance company and simply add a car to your policy. If you don’t ask how much it’s going to cost before adding the car to your policy, you will then find out when you receive your insurance bill and that can be a shocker that you weren’t prepared for.

Extra Features
All cars and trucks come with standard features, such as air conditioning and air bags. However, salesmen will often try to add features to the standard car. While these features sound nice, you have to understand that they will increase the price of your car. Since you are buying a larger vehicle, you may decide that power windows and locks are essential since you can’t just simply reach behind you to roll up a window or lock a door. You may, however, be able to forgo the luxury of having a sunroof or heated seats. It is a good idea to write down all the features that are important to you and stick with that list.

Capacity and Storage Space
You are obviously considering the purchase of a larger vehicle because you need more room. Know the exact capacity of the new vehicle and ensure there is a seat belt for each space. If you look at a car and only go by what the dealer tells you, then you may be deceived by the size of the car. It may look larger than what it is and you may think there are more passenger seats than there really are. You don’t want to buy a new car thinking you can fit eight and find that there are only seven seat belts.

The decision to buy a new and larger car is a big deal. Take the time to search comments of others through facebook or twitter. Ask others for their opinion and you will probably get responses of others who have experience with the type of car or truck you are considering.

About Calvin Escobar

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.

At Autowise, we envision ourselves as not just a automobile blog or an automobile news website, instead we see our website as a platform to connect all automobile enthusiast and provide them with all the information they need.
