Lee Munro Sets A New Land Speed Record With His Indian Scout
When it comes to setting land speed records, the Munro family know a thing or two

It’s been 50 years since Bert Munro made history with his Indian Scout Streamliner – but now his great nephew has just gone and made history repeat itself by setting a new land speed record on an Indian Scout! Bert Munro famously rode his Indian Scout Streamliner in the under 1000cc class at the Bonneville Salt Flats, riding his motorcycle to an incredible top speed of 183.59 mph. Now, his great nephew Lee Munro has followed in his footsteps and set a land speed record of his own: reaching 186.861 mph at El Mirage in California.
A New Land Speed Record For The Munro Family
Lee Munro and his modified Indian Scout were entered into the 1350cc “Modified Partial Streamliner – Gas” category at a racing event at El Mirage, in California. What makes this record so incredible is the fact that this speed run was just a warm up for Bonneville Speed Week that takes place in August. You see, Indian wanted to really make sure that Lee was able to handle the speed…so they put him through a rather hardcore test run. And he just so-happened to set a new record in the process.
Talking to 1News, Lee explained the situation: “They’re not going to let any monkey on a bike twist a throttle without proving that. You’ve to prove your salt. The bike moves around a little bit but the Indian was pretty well-planted, it didn’t give me any reason to worry that it wasn’t stable. The engine’s so strong, the chassis is so stable – it felt like I was riding on a street on a well-built road bike – nothing scary.”
“Everybody’s been coming up to me and they associate me with Burt and what he accomplished on his Indian, and it’s quite a special feeling. I’ve been told ‘get used to being recognized, boy, because it’s about to happen’. I’m real proud, I’m very, very proud to be able to carry the name.” And quite rightly so!
Marketing Director of Indian Motorcycle, Reid Wilson added: “Motorcycling is about shedding boundaries and limitations to go beyond the norm and there is no better example of that than Burt Munro. Driven by unparalleled determination and a legendary passion for the pursuit, Burt Munro embodies the spirit of Indian Motorcycle and we couldn’t be prouder to honor his legacy with an updated version of his historic record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in August.”
