New Color Is What Makes 2018 BMW i8 Protonic Dark Silver Edition Special
The BMW i8 Protonic Dark Silver Edition adds another dark color to the i8 color lineup
Updated October 12, 2018
BMW i8 is still fresh and it looks like it will be like that for a couple of decades. Nevertheless, BMW is making all it can to produce as much special edition cars as possible to attract as many wealthy buyers as possible. It seems that they could produce a whole line of special “Protonic” versions of the i8. First one was that cool looking BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition from a couple of months ago. Now, however, for the Paris Motor Show, BMW prepared a new BMW i8 Protonic Dark Silver Edition.
As you may figure out from its name, this one is all about black and dark colors. It features the Protonic Blue color and it is quite a piece. Looking at it at the pictures we cannot actually appreciate this paint finish. As some reported, the Protonic finish really pops when the car is exposed to the sunlight. In that case, the paint sparkles in quite a special way and one can truly see the difference between it and any other paint job. The same stands for the Protonic Red and for the Protonic Blue seen here.
BMW limited its production. They did not actually cap the number of cars produced, but those who are interested will have one month to order it and that is it. The order books are opened from December the 1st and closed starting with 2017.
As ever, a hybrid engine good for 357 hp powers the 2018 BMW i8 Protonic Dark Silver Edition. A 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder joined with front twin electric motors powers the i8. The system makes enough power to launch the car to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds and to 155 mph. Some say it is as fast as the BMW M4 and that is quite nice.
Not unlike the protonic red version of the same car we covered recently, this particular rendition of the BMW i8 is lacking any substantial additional equipment or features aside from having new paint. Does it justify the exorbitant price tag? Probably not, though the rest of the already incredible car certainly might do the trick to open up that miser’s purse.
The i8 is the best selling hybrid sports car on the market and that should come as no surprise to anyone that has ever found themselves behind the wheel of just about any BMW – especially an M series. BMW does an excellent job here of translating decades of motoring experience into a sublime driving experience that has all the power without any of the muscle the brand is known for.
That’s right, this isn’t just a show pony – you can expect to find the i8 to be every bit as corner grippingly, heart poundingly, and palm sweatingly exciting as any M series car in a more agile and low-slung package. Also, it was in Mission Impossible a few years back as a concept, which is pretty cool in and of itself. Of course, that version featured little windows in the doors much like the McLaren Senna, but unlike the Senna, those cool flashy doors did not make it to production.
Door windows or not, you certainly won’t be disappointed by the BMW i8 Protonic Dark Silver Edition, even if it does cost a little more than it should.
