New Jetta for China spied – not that Jetta, the other Jetta
Published September 21, 2011
The Jetta to most European and North American car fans is a relatively modern small car that just received a new generation of model in the form of the NCS, but to Chinese consumers the Jetta is the 1982 mark two Jetta. FAW put the Jetta into production in the early 90?s but only gave it minor facelifts over the past few years to keep it relatively modern looking, China received the other Jetta in the form of the new Sagitar (NCS) which is about to come to China, but rumor has it the current Sagitar will sell alongside it as a low cost model. Now back to the Jetta, the JettaNF is expected to launch in 2012 and according to recent reports the NF will be rocking a DSG gearbox which indicates it could potentially be quite a high end model but priced at around 100,000rmb. On the other hand, VW already has multiple low end models in China priced in that segment the Lavida, the Bora, and of course the old Sagitar just to name a few.
Shanghai-VW, FAW-VW and of course Skoda China are all working together to develop China only models (although they will likely see exports to Brazil and other developing markets) as all three will share the same platform for new low cost cars which will be Jetta NF, Santana NF and the new Skoda A segment car. The Jetta NF will have a slightly shorter platform than the current Bora and Lavida which could be its Unique Selling Point to second and third tier city consumers that dont want a big car.
Media reports indicate that all three companies are referring to their new car as the A-Entry vehicle, A being its size, and Entry being an entry level car. Engine power will come in the form of EA211, which includes 1.4L, 1.6L, 1.2T and 1.4T engines. An expected launch date for the new Jetta is going to be 2013 or 2014, but the big question remains will fleet users such as cab drivers and governments flock to the New Jetta NF in the same way they bought the old one?
