New Range Rover Sport SVR Goes For Joyride, Gets Put Through Its Paces
Updated February 2, 2015
Most people know that Range Rover is an iconic British car marque. Its luxury SUVs have been treating discerning motorists to a taste of the finer things in life for decades now. But just as you got used to the brand’s latest model lineup, along comes the Range Rover Sport SVR.
Back in August 2014, Land Rover announced that it had built the fastest production Range Rover ever: the SVR.
What is the Range Rover Sport SVR?
It’s something that we’ve never seen before! On a serious note, the SVR is a pretty capable beast. It features a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine, mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.
The car boasts a whopping 543 brake horsepower and can reach 60 mph from a standing start in a mere 4.5 seconds. To put it into context, it’s only one second slower than the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X! It also boasts a top speed of 162 mph. Although you’d doubtless only do such speeds on private race tracks!
Another unique feature about the Range Rover Sport SVR is that it comes with a two-stage active exhaust system. You might be wondering what this is all about at this stage.
In a nutshell, the SVR’s active exhaust system is another way of saying that the exhaust sounds beefier at high revs. Let’s be honest with ourselves; this is a car designed for racing enthusiasts! You wouldn’t buy an SVR to keep in your garage or drive around town at 35 mph.
Land Rover say that the active exhaust system doesn’t have an adverse impact on the car’s driving dynamics.
The Range Rover Sport SVR comes with 22-inch alloy wheels. Wrapped around them are Continental SportContact 5 tires to “complement the driver-focused chassis.” There are also several aerodynamic features that come standard on the SVR to improve performance and drag.
It’s a car that is worth more than my house. I’m sure one can afford to buy the SVR on the used car market in time. But don’t expect to find one on the http://www.saxton4x4.co.uk website any time soon!
The SVR’s day out at the track
Earlier in December 2014, the Range Rover Sport SVR got put through its paces at the Rockingham circuit over in Blighty (i.e. the UK). Mike Cross, the Chief Engineer for Vehicle Integrity, was the lucky chap that got behind the wheel of the SVR at Rockingham.
Land Rover released a 90-second film clip of the car in action over on YouTube(shown below). Although it’s not a long film clip, it’s worth watching just to see how awesome this piece of British motoring is!
The film clip demonstrates the Range Rover SVR’s advanced four-wheel drive capabilities. Not to mention how quick this car goes!
In case you wondered, Rockingham Motor Speedway is one of the UK’s newest racing circuits. It’s based in Northamptonshire, not too far away from the world-famous Santa Pod drag strip. Of course, it’s a bit of trek if you want to visit from the United States!
