Rider Drops His Pillion Without Even Noticing!

This is probably one of the more bizarre videos we’ve seen recently… How this guy managed to drop his pillion passenger without immediately noticing is beyond belief. And what kind of move was this rider even attempting in the first place? It certainly is a weird situation. (Note: You’ll have to follow the YouTube link to watch this video, the original uploader wants it that way, for some reason.)

There are as many schools of thought on the “do’s and don’ts” of riding with a pillion passenger as there are motorcyclists. Every rider has a preference, and every pillion should be instructed about that preference before getting on the bike. Whenever I take a passenger, I always ask if they prefer holding the bar, or the hug, and they usually reply with the standard “do I lean with you?” as an answer. It doesn’t really matter what they do, but I always let them know this: “don’t make any sudden or bizarre movements – and don’t think I can hear you either.” What I reckon we’ve got here is a serious case of both, and a load of miscommunication.

For reasons unknown, this pillion passenger seems to make an odd movement, perhaps trying to help support the weight of the cruiser, or perhaps trying to get off the thing. Either way, our man at the controls doesn’t seem to really notice what’s going on. While the bike is unsettled, he decides to pull away, and our fidgeting passenger takes a hard tumble.

Fortunately, the lady in question seems to recover fairly quickly, and no serious injuries seem to have been sustained. While we’re still not entirely sure what exactly was going on in this video, we can take away a few key bits of advice: always prep your pillion passenger on what to do, what not to do, and how best to get your attention if there’s a problem. I learned this shit growing up when I was ever on the back of my dad’s bike…long stretches of open highway…holding on for dear life…praying “for fuck’s sake, I hope this bike doesn’t have another gear”…and massaging my teenage twig-like arms afterwards… Communication is important!

About Joe Appleton

I’ve done a bit of work here and there in the industry – I’ve even ridden a few bikes for actual money but what it comes down to is this: I ride bikes, build bikes and occasionally crash ‘em too. I like what I like but that certainly doesn’t make my opinion any more valid than yours…
