Tesla Roadster 3.0 To Have 400 Mile Range
“Roadster upgrade will enable non-stop travel from LA to SF — almost 400 mile range. Details tmrw. Merry Christmas!” – This was a tweet by Elon Musk published on December 26th at 12.22 AM. The tweet proves that Tesla is onto something spectacular. Yes, they have build an electric Roadster that can run on a single charge for almost 400 miles: the Tesla Roadster 3.0. Well, 400 miles long is a stretch of road connecting two of major California cities and if they’ve produced an electric car than can travel from one to another without ever stopping, then we welcome you to the future (luckily, not in a DeLorean).
According to Tesla, 2.500 customers have purchased the Roadster till this moment, and many of them will be eligible for the 3.0 upgrade which brings some really impressive enhancements in the Battery department, aerodynamics and software monitoring all of that.
Elon Musk is well known all over the world, yet he had some issues communicating with the market with the Tesla Motor Company. First of all, we’ve learnt that Musk tends to promise much more than the Tesla Motor Company is capable of delivering. We have been waiting for the Model X, the Model E and for the battery swapping stations for quite a while now, and every promised project had to be pushed a few months (or even years) so Tesla can make everything perfect. This way, the credibility of the company suffers, but with the 2015 Roadster update, Tesla is on the brink of achieving unachievable. In short, they’ve packed much more energy in the battery pack basically the same size as the one used for the model revealed in 2008. Precisely, they’ve packed 31 percent more power into the most dense electric batteries ever commercialised. The new battery pack will be available for the Tesla Roadster in a few months, and as a demonstration of the performance of the car, Tesla will drive one Roadster 3.0 from Los Angeles to San Francisco. This way, they will test the updated car; we will see if it will provide enough juice for 400 miles.
Despite developing a whole new battery, the Tesla Motor Company made everything in their power to make the Roadster more aerodynamically efficient. The new body-kit has been developed and the drag coefficient of the Tesla Roadster fell from 0.36 Cd to 0.31 Cd. This is still far from the drag coefficient of the Tesla Model S which is valued at 0.24 Cd, but any improvement is worth mentioning.
Apart from changing the body kit and adding better batteries, the Tesla Roadster 3.0 received new special tires with lower rolling resistance. The resistance was lowered from 11 to 8.9 kilograms per ton with the addition of new tires. This way, the new Tesla Roadster is 40 to 50 percent more efficient in comparison with the previous model. With new batteries and improved system of changing the batteries demonstrated earlier, Tesla really is at the forefront of the electric car development. If they successfully market the battery swapping stations (which cost at least $500.000 each) and the new batteries prove to be good enough for the commercialisation, then, in five to ten years (when the gas prices triple in comparison to what we pay now), the electric car will be the best and most logical alternative. That way, Tesla will become bigger and possibly, more important than any car company to date.
