The 10 States With The Most Speed Traps

Published May 30, 2016

One of the most frustrating parts of driving is receiving a speeding ticket in the mail because you were driving your car too fast through a speed trap. These traps often consist of cameras that automatically take pictures of a car that is traveling through the site too rapidly.

Being familiar with such sites myself, I notice that the posted speed limit at these sites is typically less than the posted speed limit before and after the site.

The National Motorists Association (NMA) has studied the presence of speed traps to determine a state’s propensity for using these sites for revenue-based traffic enforcement.

The association has identified the worst states for speed trap activity in the United States. It developed its rankings based on the number of speed traps reported within a state over a five-year period (November 1, 2010 through October 31, 2015). The totals were indexed to the number of road miles in each state. This standardizes the data to account for differences between states and allows more meaningful comparison from state to state.

A speed trap.
