The 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Is On Deck.
Published October 13, 2014
Let’s jump into something that is a lot different, and pretty much is a total contradiction to what we Gearheads know as power. At least when it pertains to muscle cars. The 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is currently on the table for discussion, and we are going to wrap our brains around what Ford has done here for a few minutes.
OK, so the 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is an automotive conundrum within itself. You take the award winning, world renown, Ford Mustang and tear it apart thoroughly. Then you apply modern day science, and physics in order to make it better than what it used to be years before. Well in this case, Ford designers decided to add one of their patented Ecoboost motors into the mix, and then let the sparks fly. Now if we refer back to my previous statement about the mustang being a conundrum, this is what I mean. The 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is powered by a 2.3L, turbocharged, Inline 4 cylinder engine that makes 310Hp at the crank, and about 279lb-ft of torque at the wheels. So yeah, a four cylinder engine is taking residence in a car that has the history, and lineage of much more powerful predecessors. Granted this new version of the Mustang was created to fill a gap that no one really knew existed. The, “Budget Minded, Fuel Conscientious Muscle Car Group”. In other words, you have an awesome looking Mustang that can run with the best of them, but keep your wallet from burning up in your pocket, every time you get near a fuel pump.
Alright, enough of the descriptive banter, let’s get into the meat and potatoes of the 2015 Ford mustang Ecoboost. Outside of the 2015 Mustang you have the aggressive, sci-fi look of a car that’s ready fight, like all the time. The front fascia is unmistakable, and looks like nothing else on the road. There are a set of HID headlights that have been lowered, and pushed further into the corners, thus allowing the hood to provide more of a styling statement than ever before. From any angle this Mustang looks great. Smooth lines, and flawless curves tease the eyes with a hint of muscular prowess that lies beneath its skin. Now depending on the trim level, you will have 9 inch wide wheels in all four corners, that keep this horse firmly planted on the pavement. The all Black ten spoke 19 inch rims simply add to the level of potency that this Mustang has. Aside from the wheels, the sloping back end, the throwback style LED taillights, and the dual exhaust tips, this Mustang is once again, #Awesome.
Under the hood of the Mustang Ecoboost is that 4 cylinder engine that everyone shook their heads in disbelief, when Ford announced that it was going in there. The funny thing about 4 cylinder engines in cars like these is, you have a ridiculous amount space left over after you’ve fit it in there. This Ecoboost engine promised the same dilemma, but had a nice sized package attached to it, that helped take up a little of the unused real estate. A Twin Scroll Turbocharger provides boost for the engine in a form that keeps the power to the ground, but seems to taper off on the top end. Like I said before, this is a 4 cylinder engine, kind of similar to the one in the Focus ST, and the Fiesta ST, but it’s carrying a lot more booty than it’s smaller siblings. And speaking of booty, did I forget to mention that how Ford finally introduced an independent rear suspension to the Mustang. It’s a beautiful thing how it looks, let alone how much better this version of the Mustang handles corners now. Simply marvelous. Mated to the 4 cylinder engine is a stout 6 speed transmission that comes in either manual, or automatic. Top speed of this pony is around 155mph, but I truly believe that in this version, that number won’t remain there for much longer. I can already see the other tuners such as COBB building a Hoonigan approved version of this EcoBoost pony in the future.
Inside of the 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost, the driver is privy to a scene that could only be provided by the designers in the Ford Mustang camp. Huge circular brightly lit gauges, that have been surrounded by chrome bezels tease the eyes to look away when the driver isn’t actually moving too fast. Ford minimized the amount of buttons on the center dash, by simply clustering them around the full color screen, and spreading some button love on the steering wheel. Ford’s SYNC infotainment system performs brilliantly, and just adds to the ease of driving in this fuel friendly, Go Fast 2 door coupe. At the end of the day, this 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is something of a technological marvel in the sense that, it’s blazing a small trail for anyone else bold, or brave enough to follow. I mean, with Dodge just dropping the Hellcat in our laps, and Chevy focusing most of their energy on the Camaro, the EcoBoost Mustang might have to play with some of the Japanese guys in order for the world to truly take notice.
