The Benefits of Diesel Tuning Versus an ECU Remap

Updated March 27, 2014

An ECU remap is a process that involves refining the sophisticated programme that monitors the engine control unit to reflect the individual performance needs of the driver. It has long been thought that remaps are better than diesel tuning boxes, but when comparing the pros and cons of the two, this isn’t exactly the case.

Many drivers find that diesel tuning boxes are just as good as or more practical than a full ECU remap for a variety of reasons:

A diesel tuning box is a much cheaper option compared to a remap. ECU remaps can cost in excess of £500 and cannot transfer between cars. A tuning box is a one-off payment that is around 50% cheaper than a remap and can be moved from car to car without the requirement of hiring a professional to install it.

A diesel tuning box can therefore be an investment to a driver, as it is adaptable to each new car or can be sold onto other motorists when it is no longer needed.

A diesel tuning box can simply plug in and go, it can be installed and removed easily without voiding any manufacturing warranty and unlike an ECU remap is not a permanent process. The only way reverse a remap is to pay for another remap to put it back to normal.

Once a diesel tuning box is removed your car can go back to the original factory settings which is particularly important if your car is still under the manufacturer’s warranty.

All that is needed to install a diesel tuning box are some basic tools such as a socket set, as it plugs straight into the engine’s existing structure. No wire cutting involved.

Diesel tuning boxes are arguably just as effective as a full ECU remap and can improve the overall performance of an engine significantly. They can offer 40% more power and torque to an engine, as well as 20% increased MPG.

Tuning boxes can save fuel and money by effectively adjusting and streamlining the engine’s fuel injection parameters for improvement of the timing, pressure and quantity of fuel added. The tuning box will make the car more capable of carrying out tasks more easily and means it will work less hard to achieve a higher performance, resulting in less fuel used overall.

Overall, a diesel tuning box is a much cheaper and equally effective option to improve a car’s engine capability and performance compared to a full ECU remap.

TDI tuning is a UK-based business that specialises in diesel tuning boxes and other diesel tuning products.

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.
