The BMW M4 GTS Is A 493 HP Water-Injected Beast
Updated September 17, 2018
Well, this didn’t take long. Alfa Romeo revealed that their insane Giulia Q can lap the ‘Ring in 7 minutes and 39 seconds (faster than any similar car) only a few weeks ago and now we are greeting the car royalty – the BMW M4 GTS which can do it 11 seconds faster (we said the concept has the potential to be best ever). Seriously!? 11 seconds? You can tie a tie knot (if you are really skilled at it), tie your shoes, or open a bottle of wine in 11 seconds. Awesome! BMW just saved us 11 seconds of our time in the world by creating the fastest, probably the most amazing and definitely the most nuts car they’ve ever put to the production.
After extensive Nurburgring testing and thousands of miles of driving, the BMW M4 GTS finally hit the Internet with the looks of a hardcore Beemer racer who isn’t afraid to take on the mightiest and on the fastest cars of today. You probably still don’t get how crazy fast this car is. At 7 minutes and 28 seconds run over the Green Hell, the BMW M4 GTS is in the ballpark with the 600hp+ powerful McLaren MP4-12C, with the 600hp+ Porsche Carrera GT and it is faster than the *ucking Mercedes SLS AMG.
Of course, making it this faster than the regular M4 (24 seconds faster over the ‘Ring) wasn’t an easy task. To do it, BMW had to resort to a serious diet which did not slash weight as much as we’d expect, but it did justify the installation of new impressive equipment we’ll get to shortly. Now, what do you think how much of this car is actually carbon fiber!? It seems that BMW M have never made such a carbon-fiber enriched car. The aluminum bonnet was replaced, the trunk lid is new also, the added adjustable front splitter, adjustable rear wing and rear diffuser are all carbon-fiber.
Coupling this with the classic M4 carbon fiber elements like the roof, parts of the architecture, the prop shaft and the carbon fiber brakes (standard for the M4 GTS), we can see that the M4 GTS is possibly the most carbon-fiber car BMW has ever made. Also, the inside got the same treatment with the carbon fiber seats (not available in the US due to some you-cannot-have-carbon-fiber-seats regulation), GFRP shelf and rear panel and CFRP inserts. Of course, the carbon fiber elements on the inside are hidden under the thick Alcantara or Merino leather thus keeping the exclusivity where it needs to be. Obviously, Motorsport did it right again.
With all this carbon fiber frenzy, the weight is at 3,328 lbs with all fluids on board and the tank filled up to 90%. That’s simply awesome. This definitely makes the BMW M4 GTS the most hard-core BMW of today and it is the car which can stack up with the greatest from the past (like the M3 GTS, the M3 CSL and other).
To finish it off in a fashion we all expect from the BMW, the Bavarian company significantly improved the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo engine. Equipping it with water injection technology which basically injects fine water spray into the intake manifold under the pressure of 10 bar, the Motorsport engineers got the opportunity to trick the engine into producing even more power. The water injection system injects water in the manifold thus reducing the temperature by 25 degrees Celsius. Thanks to this, the compression ratio can be increased, as well as the turbo pressure, thus effectively enabling the car to make a bigger bang in the cylinder and produce more power. By more, we mean 68hp more. Now, the M4 GTS has 493hp (500 HP if you are in Europe) and it develops 434 lb-ft of torque (600 Nm for you across the pond). Coupling all the power with the only available seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT), the M4 GTS can hit 60 in 3,7 seconds and go all the way up to 189,5 mph. You have read that right – it’s sick fast!
You are probably interested in learning about the water injection system. Basically, it sources water from a small one or two-gallon tank in the trunk. After the track day and after a full tank of gas has been burnt, the water tank requires a refill, however, in normal driving, the tank requires the refill only after every fifth fuel refill. And if you forget to refill it, the smart BMW M4 GTS will only reduce the power of the engine to a normal level of 425 HP thus ensuring the functionality of everything.
BMW will make 700 M4 GTS cars and it may be that every one of them will fetch a price of more than $100 grand.
