The Legacy Dodge Power Wagon: Old Made New

This Old Dodge Power Wagon Was Given A New Lease Of Life!

Updated October 3, 2018

What is a classic American truck design from World War II that symbolizes toughness and power? Many would guess a Jeep but I would argue that the Dodge Power Wagon is a much stronger symbol.

The Dodge Power Wagon is a four-wheel drive light truck that was produced between 1945 and 1981. Based upon the Dodge ¾ ton WC Series World War II military trucks, the Power Wagon is the civilian version of the legendary truck.

The Dodge Power wagon was a strong basic four-wheel drive truck that was an early predecessor to many of today’s modern trucks.   It was big, heavy, and reliable. Designed to compete with the Ford and GMC trucks at the time, the Dodge Power Wagon had an enclosed all-weather civilian cab connected to an eight foot long cargo box.

Power for the first generation Power Wagon was through a 230 cubic-inch flat head inline-six engine, a two-speed transfer case, and a four speed manual transmission. In 1961, the 230 was replaced with a 251 cubic-inch flat head engine.

The Power Wagon sold not only in the United States, but globally as well. As a result, there is a following of the vehicle around the World.

Legacy Power Wagon is one such company that has turned their attention to improving upon the classic Power Wagon. Legacy will restore the frame and body of the classic Power Wagon and upgrade the power train with modern mechanicals.

The 251 cubic-inch flat-head inline six engine is replaced with a 6.2 liter LT1 V8 engine sourced from the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Putting out 480 horsepower, the massive power plant gets the Power Wagon from 0 to 60 in 6.3 seconds. For a vehicle with a 5,500 pound curb weight, this is very impressive performance.

If an LT1 is not your cup of tea, additional engine options are available for the Legacy Power Wagon including a 3.9-liter Cummins turbo diesel engine. Buyers also have a choice of a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission as well.

While the power train enhancements are impressive, it is not the best that Legacy has to offer. They will turn your two-passenger Power Wagon into a four-passenger pick up truck. This is done by combining two of the classic Power Wagon frames into one that results in a pick up truck with double the interior space for you, your family, or your friends.

As would be expected, the interior is updated to the customer’s requirements using high quality materials. Some buyers have opted for a luxurious leather interior while others have chosen a race interior complete with Recaro racing buckets and a custom steering wheel.

Over the years, Legend has built up an extensive inventory of Power Wagon frames and bodies. As a result, you can choose from one or two of the vehicle donors in their inventory to build out your Legacy Power Wagon. Otherwise, you can provide them with your own donor vehicle or two.

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.

At Autowise, we envision ourselves as not just a automobile blog or an automobile news website, instead we see our website as a platform to connect all automobile enthusiast and provide them with all the information they need.
