Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive

The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe E-Drive.

Updated June 26, 2014

MB SLS AMG E-DriveIn automotive news, technically unrelated to the 2012 Paris Auto Show, automaker Mercedes Benz has revealed a new working prototype that has a very strong chance of being added to their already stellar lineup.

The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe E-drive is the manufacturer’s way of setting the roads on fire with pure electricity. MB (Mercedes Benz) let the world know about a proposed concept called the SLS AMG E-Cell back in 2010, and from that point forward MB had nothing but high hopes for all things electric, and or hybrid driven. The overall goal for this car was to show the world that, just because the car you drive is electric, it doesn’t mean you need to be restricted by either distance or speed.

With that in mind MB decided to infuse some of their world renown F1 technology, and make MB SLS AMG E-Drive Coupethis new SLS AMG E-Drive something of a technological marvel. To begin, the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe E-Drive’s body is comprised of nothing less than Carbon Fiber, and High Grade Aluminum materials. This frame holds quite a few components that make this car move exceptionally faster than any other EV cars on the road today. MB has speculated that this SLS AMG E-drive will achieve a speed upwards of 155mph, and pull a zero to sixty in about 3.9 seconds. Tesla can’t even touch those numbers. So how does it all work, let see.

Power for the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe E-Drive comes in the form of a 1,208 pound Lithium-ion battery that is connected to four(4) electric motors that are axially-arranged inside of the E-Drive coupe. It’s a strange word that MB came up with, that basically means, any MB SLS AMG E-drive Coupepower from the batteries can be routed, and directed to any one or all of the motors, at any given time. This new technology allows for a more sustainable drive, at higher speeds, and for a longer period of time. The total output of the combination of batteries, and motors produces just over 745hp, and 725ft pounds of torque. Also proven by MB, is that the E-Drive Coupe can travel up to a 155 miles on a single charge. The E-Drive Coupe also comes with a standard recuperation feature that charges the batteries as the car decelerates, thus extending your overall drive time. The E-drive Coupe can be charged with a standard outlet for about twenty(20) hours, but that time can drop to about three(3) hours with an optional 20kW wall box.

The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe E-Drive’s interior is that of a classic sports car that has been transported into the distant future, and now resides there indefinitely. The long hood will only house thick pieces of Carbon Fiber instead of a monstrous V8 motor, but to make up for MB SLS AMG Copue E-Drivethat loss, MB has decided to incorporate eleven(11) external speakers that mimic all of the well known MB sound effects. The mighty roar, the deep sounding burbling rumble, and the sound of the engine when it’s shifting gears.

The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe E-Drive is scheduled to hit showrooms mid 2013, and will run the price tag of about $535,869 dollars, or 416,500 Euros. Even if that price is kind of high, but this would be a fabulous edition to any garage lucky enough to house it.

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.
