Updated September 11, 2013

motor insuranceWhile the rules of motor insurance in the UK are simple, the types of motor insurance can become a little more involved. You must have minimum coverage motor insurance before you can drive a vehicle on any public road and there are no exceptions to this. Motor insurance provides protection for you, your vehicle and other drivers if you are involved in any accident. Motor insurance provides for any injuries or property damage that you may cause if you are involved in an accident. While there is no variation on having motor insurance, there are different types of motor insurance that you can purchase. The following will explain the types of motor insurance to help you choose which the best is for you.

Types of Motor Insurance Coverage

  • Third Party Only

Third Party Only coverage is the minimum legal amount of coverage that a person may have. This type of coverage only covers property damage and injuries that other people involved in an accident with you suffer. This also includes only the passengers of your vehicle. If you are involved in an accident, it will not cover any damage to your vehicle or injuries you suffer. While this is the minimum motor insurance you must have, you can provide for larger monetary amounts of coverage by choosing different levels of Third Party Only insurance. This coverage varies from provider to provider, so you will want to inquire what types are available through your insurance company.

  • Third Party including Fire and Theft

Third Party including Fire and Theft coverage provides the same coverage as Third Party Only insurance, but also covers your vehicle in the event it is damaged in a fire or stolen. Keep in mind, this does not cover fires that are due to an accident, if your vehicle catches fire for any other reason other than a collision, this policy will provide coverage.

  • Comprehensive Motor Insurance

Comprehensive Motor Insurance provides the same coverage as Third Party including Fire and Theft, but in addition, will provide coverage if your vehicle is damaged in an accident. You also have the option to include additional coverage as well. Some of these additions include provisions for a courtesy car while your vehicle is being repaired, legal expenses insurance to    cover any amounts not covered by motor insurance, roadside recovery and vehicle repairs in case you break down.

About Calvin Escobar

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.

At Autowise, we envision ourselves as not just a automobile blog or an automobile news website, instead we see our website as a platform to connect all automobile enthusiast and provide them with all the information they need.
