Let’s All Take A Moment To Appreciate The Beauty Of The VW Jetta VR6 GLX

Hey, thanks for joining us again for another Throwback Thursday write up. Today’s piece is going to be another one of my personal favorites, and that car would be the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta VR6 GLX.

Now the Volkswagen name is synonymous with words like German made, long lasting, reliable, and fun to drive, and in most cases those words would most likely apply to the well known VW Beetle. That was a car that to this very day is more popular than any of these other million dollar high rollers you see online today. But we will tackle that lovely VW in another segment. Today is all about the Jetta, or Vento, or Bora as it’s called in the UK. The Volkswagen Jetta first made its appearance back in 1979 with the Mk1 2 door sedan version of the then brand new car. Like any other well known Volkswagen, tons of people took to the Jetta like drunk girls at a RHCP concert. Back then it was very boxy, and tall for a car its size, but then you’d have to know that cars back then had very big windows. Another point of fact of the time was that the Jetta was marketed as an upscale version of the Golf. Volkswagen designers figured by adding a trunk where the normal Golf hatch was, you gave the people more trunk space, and seating room. Power for the 1979 Jetta would float anywhere between 55HP, to 105HP depending on the engine that was under the hood.

If we fast forward two more generations, and about 13 years wecome across the Volkswagen Jetta Mk3. This version spanned from 1992 to 1999, and gave the world a whole new car to love. Those sharp, and for the most part un-aerodynamic lines square lines had been replaced with smoother, and more subtle curves. Also the body seemed to grow a bit, and this was a welcome fact too. Inside of the Mk3 Jetta there was enough room for 5 adults, and the seats were always comfortable. Up front, the driver had simple yet functional analog gauges that narrowed down everything that was going on with the car. A leather wrapped steering wheel matched up well with the 5 speed shift knob that sat below the center console.

Now we need to move over to the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta VR6 GLX version to see what made this car so desirable. First off, you had the 2.8L, 6 cylinder engine that made about 175Hp, and 170 pound feet of torque to the wheels. For a car this size, that power was nothing to sneeze at. What made the VR6, and just about any Volkswagen popular was all the low end torque it provided. It simply meant that you could get through your power band a lot better than most cars on the road. Mated to the VR6 engine was this smooth, and damn near effortless manual shifter that had that patented VW “J Reverse” motion.

In the average five speed manual shifter, reverse is found or engaged in the lower right section or gate. In Volkswagens, it’s always on the lower left side. You would need to push down on the shifter, then swing or rotate your hand clockwise from about the 6 o’clock position, and then engage reverse. Inside of the 98′ VR6 GLX, you would find supple black leather wrapped seats that would burn the crap out of your ass in the summer time, but they looked good. Many owners would like to swap in Golf GTi seats for the sake of saving their skin, and the side bolsters were about the same.

Suspension for the Jetta pretty much always came in the form of McPhearson struts, and the ride they provided was always smooth. Wrapping up the look of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta VR6 GLX was those 16 inch 7 spoke wheels that just made this car look so damn good. Granted there were other wheels available to throw on, but for the most part if you wanted to make a statement with a completely stock car, those were the way to go.
