Top Five Cars For The School Run

Updated October 2, 2013

Finding a car that is safe, stylish, nice to drive, and suitable for the school run can be pretty tricky.  All too often, those supposedly “roomy interiors” are far too cramped to safely occupy the entire family, especially when you try to squeeze a guitar, trombone, and sports kit into the back as well.

That’s probably why 4x4s and SUVs are so popular with families.  They’re rugged, spacious, and generally comfortable.  Here’s a look at our favourite family cars for this year.

1. KIA Sportage SUV

The KIA Sportage SUV has been a firm favourite since 2011.  This stylish SUV is quite affordable, with the basic model coming in at £17,300.  The KIA SPortage SUV is quiet, comfortable, and produces relatively low emissions for a car of its size.  It is available in both two and four-wheel drive.

2. Land Rover Discovery 4

The Land Rover Discovery is an institution in the world of SUVs.  This is the fourth version of the car, and it’s a great step forward in design.  It looks a lot like the third edition, but inside, the cabin is much higher quality.  In addition, the 3.0 Litre V6 Diesel engine offers good power, smooth handling, and decent mileage.  If you’re on a tight budget, you can pick up older generation Discoveries quite cheaply, and they’re fairly reliable vehicles.  With that said, the interiors on the older models do leave something to be desired.

3. BMW X5

What family wouldn’t want to be seen doing the school run in a BMW?  Not only is the BMW X5 a sturdy and quality car, it’s spacious and luxurious too. There’s a pair of optional seats in the boot, and if you remove them, you’ll have enough luggage space to enjoy even the longest of family road trips.  This may be a more expensive vehicle, but it’s got good resale value, and it will serve you well, and as long as you keep up with your BMW service calendar, you can be confident that it will run well for many years.

4. Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder is big, practical, and hard-wearing.  It boasts seven seats, and handles well both on-and off the road.  It’s a little rough around the edges, with a noisy engine, and not really the smoothest of rides.  However, the fuel economy and the size both make up for the problems.  If you have a big family, or tend to drive half the school football team around on weekdays, then this is a good (and affordable) option.

5. Volkswagen Touareg

The Volkswagen Touareg SUV has been around for a long time.  You can probably pick up a used, first generation Touareg quite cheaply, but if you can afford it, you might be better off getting one of the newer (post 2010) models.  The newer model is bigger than the first generation one, but also more economical to run.  Both models are tough and luxurious though, so it’s hard to go wrong.

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.
