What to expect from the Audi A3 Saloon (2013)
Updated September 29, 2015
Since Audi launched its A3 model in 1996, it’s gone on to become one of the most popular small family cars on the market thanks to its superior build quality, pleasant ride and elegant exterior.
The Audi A3 hatchback, for example, has long been a popular choice among car owners, and offers buyers a chic but understated motor with reliable engine options and sensible running costs.
Offered with four petrol engines ranging from 1.2 to 1.8 litres and two diesel engine 1.6 and 2.0 TDI options, the A3 has been a firm favourite among families and company car drivers alike.
Fast forward to 2013, though, and a new, bigger, kid has been thrown into the mix to make the decision making process even tougher: the A3 Saloon.
Introduced as a new class of junior executive car, the A3 is Audi’s response to the Mercedes-Benz CLA. Designed to close the gap between a premium family hatchback and a traditional executive saloon, the Saloon is based on the A3 Sportsback.
However, the Saloon’s chassis is markedly wider, longer and lower, and benefits from flared wheel arches and an integrated rear spoiler – and although it costs more than the Sportsback, it’ll set you back much less than a BMW 3 Series and, arguably, looks much sleeker.
When it’s launched, Audi lovers can choose from a 1.4 turbo petrol, which offers 138bhp, or a 1.8 turbo pumping out 178bhp. For the more fuel conscious, a 2.0 diesel will be available, while a fairly eco-friendly 1.6-litre option will be offered at some point next year.
On the road, the A3 offers a quiet and comfortable drive without doing anything too flashy. Although it’s far from boring, the Saloon is likely to appeal to those who require a bigger car than a hatchback, but can’t quite afford a ‘big Audi’.
All A3 Saloons come with alloy wheels, air conditioning, digital radio, iPod connectivity, and Bluetooth hands-free as standard, alongside a smorgasbord of optional extras – audio system upgrades and LED front lighting systems, for example – we’ve come to expect from the German motoring giant.
The A3 Saloon is on sale from September and priced from £24,275.
