Will This Brough Superior Become The Most Expensive Motorcycle Ever?

Could This Become The Most Expensive Brough Superior Motorcycle For Sale?

Updated August 21, 2018

Although most original Brough Superior motorcycles sell for astronomical figures, this particular model could very well become the most expensive motorcycle ever sold at auction. The Brough Superior SS100, nicknamed the “Moby Dick” will be going to auction at the RM Sotheby’s auctions at the Villa Erba in Lake Como, Italy, alongside some very special rare motorcycles, including five other Brough Superior machines.

The 1928 Brough Superior SS100 “Moby Dick”

The 1928 “Moby Dick” Brough Superior SS100 boasts an incredible 1140cc v-twin engine that was tuned by George Brough himself and JAP technicians and was once the world’s fastest privately owned motorcycle. In its heyday, it was capable of speeds of up to 115 mph. 109 of those miles per hour, was achievable in second gear. Imagine that!

The name “Moby Dick” was first coined by the UK’s Motor Cycling magazine in 1931, and those incredible speeds mentioned above were clocked in their exclusive test. It was quite a marvel then, and as you can see, it still creates excitement in the present day.

This isn’t the first time that this special Brough Superior SS100 has gone under the hammer. Back in 2011, Bonham’s sold this exact same model for £210,500 – approximately $333,210. When it goes under the hammer again, experts expect the Brough to sell between €500,000 and €700,000 ($546,471 and $765,060). That might not seem as earth shattering as some of the figures you’ve heard before, but hold on…

Remember the classic “Captain America” chopper from Easy Rider? Well, that did get auctioned for a massive $1.35 million back in 2014. Surely that’s the most expensive bike to go under auction? Sadly not. The deal was never completed because of uncertain originality. So, we can strike that from the list.

Brough Superior Motorcycle For Sale 5

What about the ever-referenced 1915 Cyclone board track racer that sold in Vegas for a record $825,000 back in 2015? Well, that’s the real competition. You see, $840,000 is about €760,000 – so if the Brough Superior SS100 gets enough attention and the bids go over estimate, it could well become the most expensive motorcycle ever sold at auction. And of course, minuscule inflation in exchange rates could definitely help out too… But we will have to wait and see.

Apart from the Giacomo Agostini MV Agusta, and five other Brough Superior motorcycle for sale, the Lake Como auction will also feature some huge price tag machinery, including exotic Gileras, old school BSA and Vincents, a couple of rather nice BMWs, and a Zundapp!
