Yamaha Rumors: Is There An All New R6 In The Pipeline?
How About A Few Fresh Yamaha R6 Rumors?
Updated August 14, 2018
We reported a few rumors earlier on this year but now another picture has emerged online, along with even more grist for the rumor mill. Again, we’ve heard that an updated and newer version of the YZF-R6 is on the cards – and if the rumors and pictures are to be believed, it seems that this “all new R6” will be taking a lot of design cues from Yamaha’s flagship sportsbike and rider favorite: the R1. However, compared to last time, this picture look a little dubious, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Fresh Yamaha R6 Rumors
To be honest though, the R6 could do with a significant update. Since it first came on the scene in the late 1990s, it hasn’t really had much in the way of a technical overhaul – save for a few cosmetic changes and the necessary upgrades to keep it competitive with its segment rivals – and of course, the last “update” in 2008. Talking of segment rivals: since Honda are putting the CBR600RR to pasture at the end of the year, does Yamaha really have to invest in a complete overhaul? There’s two schools of thought: “Yes, now’s the time to revolutionize the bike and dominate the category!” or “Probably not – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” I think Yamaha are thinking along the lines of the latter, however, I’d be delighted if I’m proven wrong. Previously, there was talk of ABS and traction control features and upgrades – but we still have no solid proof that a new R6 is even a thing.
Anyway, let’s talk about what we can see: this “R6” has a lot in common with the R1, such as the hidden headlight, the tank air vents, and the mirror mounted signals. There are touches of swingarm similarities but we can only really go on what we can see.
So what’s the general consensus? Is this a clue to a next generation R6? Or are we looking at some industrious design student’s handiwork, sticking the R6 logo on an R1 mock up? No doubt more Yamaha R6 rumors will follow soon…
