2020 GMC Jimmy Gets Green Light

Not exactly the GMC Jimmy I hoped to see return

Wait, if the 2020 GMC Jimmy gets approved for production, does that include a 2020 Chevy Blazer variant? Simply put, not exactly. Well compensated insiders have leaked plans for a GM based 2-door convertible, 4-door convertible compact class SUV. It’s really no surprise as Ford looks to produce the Bronco in 2020 as Jeep Wranglers have maintained strong sales in the niche market. It seems auto manufacturers can entice some with a “crossover” but they have left the small SUV off-road enthusiasts and convertible 4×4 market completely barren.

GM looks to capitalize on a majority of shared parts from the Colorado/Canyon powertrain and underpinnings. Good news as this also includes the 2.8L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel I-4 engine. In discussion was also a revamped version of the Camaro 2.0L Turbo which means either gas or diesel will offer plenty of low-end torque. Entry level and global markets will receive the 2.5L I4 DI DOHC VVT engine.

2020 GMC Jimmy ZR2 “Like” Special Edition

Plans for a special edition GMC Jimmy (marque undetermined) includes features similar to the Chevy Colorado ZR2. This includes a wider track, suspension lift as well as front and rear electronic locking differentials, available 2.8L Duramax, and Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSVTM) suspension. The interior, fenders, grille and hood will have a “unique & aggressive” appearance.

2020 GMC Jimmy Production

Production of the 2020 Jimmy will likely take place at the Wentzville plant after recent additions to the plant have been made. Special editions may be allocated to the Shreveport facility although this is an educated speculation. Global production is also planned at the Rayong, Thailand and São José dos Campos, Brazil plants. When asked if all GMC Jimmy production will be all 4×4 platform, we were told that “the global market will vary production”.

The GMC Jimmy will share a similar cab layout as the quad-cab Canyon. When we asked for rear storage space, we were simply told “adequate”. There will be leather options especially the special editions and designers are working on a “UV and water resistant” material to use for entry level and sport editions.

About Chris Riley

I have been wrecking cars for as long as I've been driving them, but I keep coming back for more. Two wheels or four, I'm all in. I founded GearHeads.org and then built and ran AutoWise.com until selling it to Lola Digital Media in 2020. I look forward to watching AutoWise grow as part of the AllGear group.
